Xiaomi presentation in Shanghai

Hello! At yesterday's presentation in Shanghai, Xiaomi announced their new Mi MIX 2s, as well as a gaming laptop and a smart speaker with a voice assistant. Most of the attention was paid to the smartphone, so we will focus on it, but we will also talk about other new items.

Positioning Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s

If we greatly simplify the Xiaomi lineup, then it can be conditionally divided into two large lines - inexpensive Redmi and more advanced Mi. The latter include Mi6, Mi MIX 2 and Mi Note 3. Among these three models, MIX 2 looked like the flagship, however, unlike Mi6 and Mi Note 3, it did not have a dual camera, and, in principle, the main module was mediocre. The updated Mi MIX 2s essentially solves this problem and gets a few cosmetic updates to make it stand out against the 2018 flagships. Therefore, we will talk in detail about the innovations, but we will not dwell on the rest of the parameters that have not changed.

Camera

I sincerely do not understand the desire of Chinese companies to copy Apple where it is not necessary at all. Look at the appearance of the dual module and its location, they repeat the iPhone X almost one to one! Are there really users who are guided by the similarity with the iPhone as a criterion for choosing a smartphone? If I want to buy an iPhone X, I will go to the store and do it, and if I don’t need this smartphone, then I’m unlikely to be impressed by copying its design from other manufacturers.

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

However, we usually look at the quality of the shots, and not the location of the camera module, so let's move on to the technical specifications.

Specifications Sony IMX363 Samsung S5K3M3
Resolution 12 MP 12 MP
Purpose Wide camera Optical zoom< /td>
Aperture value f/1.8 f/2.4
Size pixels 1.4 µm 1 µm
Matrix size 1/2.55'' 1/2.9''

The main camera, in addition to the characteristics described above, has DualPixel phase detection autofocus and can record video in maximum resolution up to 4K inclusive. The camera also has 4-axis optical stabilization, dual-tone LED flash, and the device uses AI for image processing and shooting with background blur.

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

Remarkably, DxOMark gave this model a 101 for the photo part and 88 for the video. The total score is 97 points. However, despite such a high rating, DxO note the loss of detail in night shots and limited dynamic range among the shortcomings.

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

Unfortunately, this time we were not at the presentation in person, so we will be able to evaluate the capabilities of the camera only after we get the device in our hands. Judging by the characteristics, the cameras received a significant upgrade and Mi MIX 2 got rid of its key flaw.

Wireless charging

After the introduction of wireless charging in the new iPhones, most other manufacturers suddenly "remembered" that there is such a function, and began to massively add it. On the one hand, you can thank Apple for such a “reminder”, and on the other hand, Samsung has always equipped its flagships with this option, and other companies regularly saved on this.

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

In any case, the possibility of wireless charging is the second innovation in Mi MIX 2s, the device supports, among other things, a fast version of this charging with a power of up to 7.5 W. By the way, the corresponding charger was also announced, it will be sold for about 1,000 rubles in China.

New chipset

The third innovation is the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. I have already tested one smartphone on it and was satisfied with its performance. It is clear that a lot depends on the optimization of a particular smartphone, but the fact that they decided to upgrade the chipset is definitely good news. Xiaomi also notes that thanks to this, the operating time has increased due to reduced power consumption, but we will only be able to verify this after a full review.

Museum Design Awards

At the presentation, it was mentioned that this device has received awards from several prestigious museums: the National Design Museum in Finland, the Center Georges Pompidou in France and the New Collection Museum in Germany. I am very skeptical about such awards, because outwardly Mi MIX 2s can only boast of a ceramic case. I can't say that the look of this model is good enough to give her an award.

Mi Gaming Laptop

Xiaomi likes to show several other new products along with smartphone announcements, however, they are given much less attention. The same goes for this gaming laptop. In fact, only its characteristics and price were announced.

  • Processor: Intel 7th Generation
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB
  • RAM: 16 GB Dual Channel DDR4
  • Internal storage: 256 SSD + 1 TB HDD
  • Display: 15.6" FHD
  • Battery: 55 Wh (up to 6 hours)
  • Wireless interfaces: Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, Two USB Type-C

The younger version (Intel Core i5-7300HQ, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD) will be sold for 6,000 yuan (about 60,000 rubles), and the older version (Intel Core-i7 7th Gen, GeForce GTX 1060, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD) will cost customers 9,000 yuan (about 90,000 rubles).

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

It's pointless to discuss prices yet, because such expensive things are unlikely to be ordered from China, and how much a laptop will cost us and whether it will be sold at all is unknown.

Mi AI Speaker mini

The latest novelty is a compact version of a smart speaker from Xiaomi. It will be sold for just 170 yuan (about 1,700 rubles) and will function as a voice assistant for a smart home, and will also allow you to start music and listen to audio books using voice commands. I have a similar accessory, unfortunately, due to the lack of support for the Russian language in our region, it is completely useless.

Xiaomi Shanghai presentation

Conclusion

Although the number of innovations for Mi MIX 2s is not very large, each of them closes one of the shortcomings of the previous model: an average camera, lack of wireless charging and no longer the newest chipset. If the camera is really as good as it was described at the presentation, then the Mi MIX update turned out to be extremely successful. In Russia, the device will be sold, however, the date of the start of sales and the price are unknown. But we have information about prices in China for three modifications of 2s:

  • 6 GB + 64 GB - 3,300 yuan (about 33,000 rubles)
  • 6 GB + 128 GB - 3,600 yuan (about 36,000 rubles)
  • 8 GB + 256 GB - 4,000 yuan (about 40,000 rubles)

The price tag is invigorating, even for China, I really hope that the Russian retail will not be "rude" with the price and we will see a more or less affordable flagship from Xiaomi.

In the comments, you can share your thoughts about this model, I propose to discuss the new flagship together.
