Nokia S40 5th Edition platform software features

Nokia developers jumped one version in the S40 platform, the 4th edition never appeared, as this number is unfortunate in a number of eastern countries. The transition from the third version from Feature Pack 2 to the fifth does not signify fundamental changes in the ideology of the software or the functionality of devices, for example, multitasking for Java applications did not appear. Although in other respects the fifth edition is one of the strongest phone platforms on the market. The main differences include changing the music player, merging it with the video player, expanding basic functionality, such as improving the calculator.

Traditionally, we remind you that a number of functions described in this material are not only software, but also hardware. For example, your phone may not have an infrared port, or it may not have a radio. Take these points into account and look at reviews on specific devices. This material is dedicated to the general functionality of the platform, created in order not to repeat the same thing many times.

For a full description of the previous version of the platform, see the following article:

Changes in core functionality

The fundamental change is support for the Java JSR-248 umbrella profile, which is designed to standardize various Java classes on devices, in particular, this version of the platform contains the following Java APIs:

  • JSR-82, Bluetooth version 1.1 with OBEX support;
  • Mobile Media API (JSR-135), including support for device keys;
  • JSR-172, web applications and services, includes the Remote Procedure Package;
  • JSR-177, Security and Trust Services API, including SATSA-CRYPTO, which allows applications to use encryption;
  • JSR-234, support for 3D audio and music in applications;
  • Java MIDP 2.1.

The platform also received support for Flash Lite 2.1, in the previous edition it was version 2.0.

With regard to the interface, there have been no changes in the platform, QVGA remains the main screen resolution for devices.

Interface organization

On devices based on the S40 5th Edition platform (same as S40 3rd Edition), you can change the standby screen presentation. In particular, you can choose Active Standby, a traditional display with shortcuts assigned to the navigation key, plus a GoTo function (left soft key). For the standby mode, you can select the wallpaper, as well as specify the font color. For some photos, choosing a font is the best way to shade text against a contrasting image. By default, functions are assigned corresponding to different directions of the navigation key. Icons can be displayed on the screen, or they can be hidden (when Active Standby is activated, they are not displayed, all directions except up work).

Active Standby mode is similar to the desktop in smartphones (Today function), in the active state the screen is divided into several zones (a line of quick launch icons, player and radio status, calendar date and upcoming events, note text block). For active users, this is a good way to keep all relevant information on the screen. You can vary the location of the zones vertically, this expands the possibilities of the interface.

In standby mode, the clock is displayed on the screen, plus all missed calls, received messages. They display small icons and a number. For example, if you have 3 missed calls, then you will see the corresponding icon and the number 3. In the 5th edition, the caller's picture is also displayed for the missed call, if it is entered in the phone book.

< tr>

The main menu has four different views - list (5 main menu items per screen), matrix (12 icons per screen), matrix with item labels (9 icons per screen), tabs (list, grid, grid with labels, tab ). In the tabbed mode, a horizontal bar with icons of the main menu items and the corresponding inscription is displayed at the top of the screen. You can move between items by horizontal deviations, but vertically all items of the selected menu are immediately displayed. That is, navigation is dramatically simplified, you see the menu options immediately available.

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/7500-prism/img/scr/menu/menu12.jpg"/>
< tr>

In all submenus, the lists are vertical, the important difference is the smaller size of the icons next to each of the items, a smaller font, which allows you to show more lines. The decision is logical. Design due to icons looks extremely attractive, the menu is not too colorful, intuitive.

For three applications - Messages, Contacts, WEB - a separate choice of font size is available (small, normal, large). At first glance, the gradation of different font options is not too strong, but depending on the selected option, a different number of lines fit on the screen. The maximum font size doesn't make it too bold, it's still openwork.

The menu has a quick navigation using number sequences, in addition, you can use voice commands. Recognition is available only for functions predefined in the settings, no prior training is required. It is enough to say the name of the item, and the device will select it (activation by holding down the Names key). Voice recognition is generally implemented regardless of the speaker's voice, we see the same thing in the phone book. With frequent use of voice dialing, the device trains, the quality of voice recognition improves. The disadvantages include unstable work with a large number of contacts, as well as when some of them are written in a second language. In the settings, you can select the recognition language, regardless of the selected interface language.

Typing is possible using the T9 predictive typing system, despite the announcement of support for the new version of T9 with word suggestions, it is not in the third edition of S40, only one option is always offered (on the screen). Text input can be in a language other than the interface language. While typing, you can quickly switch input languages.

Themes - with the help of themes, you can change not only the font color in the menu, the design of the main menu icons, wallpapers, but also the background in each of the submenus, which is very interesting. The implementation of themes is very good, it allows you to diversify the device.

Phone book

You can store up to 1000 names in the phone's memory, this is the maximum number of entries. It makes no difference how much information you enter in the name, fill in all the available fields or just one or two. The general limit remains unchanged.

For one name, you can enter up to 5 phone numbers, select the type of number (primary, mobile, home, office, fax, video (last for 3G networks)). The first entered number becomes the default number, later you can change it as you wish. During the initial entry, you enter only the first name, last name and one main number, the rest of the actions are performed later from the editing menu. For some, such an input will not seem very convenient, someone, on the contrary, will say that they enter only one number for one name. Both will be right. Considering that such an input is implemented in all Nokia phones, we can say with confidence that it is not a problem.

As additional information for each number, you can enter an email address, website address, postal address, text note, company name, position. Among other input fields, USER ID is worth noting, this is the user ID for the presence service. In general, a kind of analogue of ICQ, which signals that a particular user from your list is available at this particular moment. There is also a Push to Talk address, which is not very interesting to most due to the unpopularity of the technology. Curious fields with a formal name (Formal name or official address), as well as Nickname (nickname). It is possible to enter a date of birth, but the corresponding entry does not appear in the calendar, and a reminder is not automatically set, as is the case on Siemens and Sony Ericsson phones.

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/7500-prism/img/scr/menu/menu6.jpg"/>
< tr>
< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/7500-prism/img/scr/phonebook/pb12.jpg"/>

The pleasant moments of entering additional information include the fact that previously entered fields by type of information are highlighted in gray, you can see that such information is already present in the device. It is impossible to create duplicate names on the phone itself, the device offers to replace the entry. At the same time, an unlimited number of identical names can be synchronized with a PC. This can create difficulties with voice dialing, it is worth considering this scenario.

You can add a photo or video for each number. By priority, the video is higher than the photo, and, accordingly, it is played (for the name, at the same time, you can save both the photo and the video at the same time). When viewing information for an individual name, you will not automatically see a photo; to view it, you will have to open the corresponding item. On the other hand, in the general list, you can set the view of the Name and the corresponding image. In this mode, the icon is small, giving a little idea of the photo. Other viewing modes of this list are traditional - only names, names with a main number. The general list can display both numbers from the SIM card memory and from the phone's memory.

< /tbody>

When making an outgoing call, the photo size is minimal, it is a small icon. When there is an incoming call, the photo is displayed in full screen. The name of the caller is displayed with the icon of the number, its type.

Each subscriber can be assigned their own personal ring tone. It can be any file. It's important to remember that when assigning a video, the audio will play from the clip, not the music file.

Traditionally, keys 2-9 can be assigned speed dial numbers.

There are no preset groups of subscribers in the phone, you create them yourself. A huge plus is that there can be up to 25 such groups. For each of the groups, you can assign your own ringtone, select an image. The picture set for a contact in the group has the advantage that it is displayed, and not the picture assigned to the group. The same subscriber can belong to different groups.

< /tbody>

In the general list of names, groups are displayed on a par with individual names, but they are indicated by the corresponding icon. The general search by name is valid for groups as well. Such an arrangement of groups of subscribers on Women Bracelets at first glance is unusual, but in the future you understand its convenience, you do not need to enter a separate menu item intended for groups (besides, it is available only from the main menu, by soft key or shortcut, you see only the list, there is also no access to the settings).

The general list can be searched for multiple letters, is no problem, and works as it should. By pressing the asterisk key, you can quickly scroll through the list to the names of the second language (for example, if you have entries in both Russian and English). While moving through the list of names, pressing the hash key opens the name view with the main number. You can see all the information for the name only from the corresponding menu (two clicks). Sorting of names can be set both by first name and last name.

Synchronization with MS Outlook is implemented better than in previous models. Most of the fields are synchronized correctly, especially for the First Name and Last Name. From the phone book menu, you can send all entries in the form of a Business Card to another device using a short message, MMS, or using a wireless protocol.

Sending the entire notebook to another device is not possible at first glance, by selecting all the names, you will not see the option to send contacts in the context menu. At the same time, from the menu Settings - Connections - Data transfer, this can be done. The phone supports synchronization (add all, replace all), in addition to contacts, you can also send notes and calendar entries.

Messages

While entering text in any menu, it is possible to switch between different languages, similar to how it is implemented on smartphones from Nokia. This function is very convenient and pleasant.

The device supports the Nokia Smart Messaging standard, which allows you to send and receive ringtones and simple black and white pictures from compatible devices. In addition to Nokia phones, this standard is supported by phones from Samsung, LG, Motorola. Unfortunately, the company's proprietary standard limits users, because the alternative EMS standard is more widespread today and allows not only sending melodies, pictures, but also formatting text.

The machine uses a single Inbox folder for all types of messages, be it SMS or MMS. The manufacturer also says that e-mail messages end up in the same folder, but this does not happen. Dynamic memory is used to store messages; we can say that in the ideal case, about 500 short messages can be stored. There is a counter for the number of messages (sent, received), the user can reset it.

When writing a message, you can select a number not only from the phone book, but also from the list of recently used, the list of calls, and also select an entire group of subscribers. In addition, a Favorites list has appeared, you can add the numbers that you use most often to it.

< tr>

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/7500-prism/img/scr/sms/sms6.jpg"/>

Unlike previous models, in the fifth edition the interface for creating SMS and MMS messages is combined, there are no differences. Depending on the selected content, the message remains as plain text or is converted to MMS. This approach is logical, as it allows you not to think about how to write, perhaps activates the use of MMS. There are no technical changes as such for this message type. Each message can be up to 300 KB in size. The implementation of MMS in the phone is good, there are no problems with it (MMS 1.2). Photos from the built-in camera are automatically scaled so that they can be sent in a message (maximum - 640x480, second size - 128x160 pixels). If the size of the snapshot does not exceed the same 300 KB or slightly less, then it can be sent without changes in the body of the message.

The rest of the set of characteristics regarding messages is standard - support for emoticons (conversion from text in incoming messages), connected messages. It is possible to set automatic replacement of messages in the Sent folder when the memory is full (the oldest messages are deleted sequentially). Delivered message reports are stored in a separate folder, which is convenient. A separate folder is also allocated for CB messages, from which you can also configure channel numbers.

Flash messages are a variant of short messages that are displayed only on the screen of the recipient and are not stored in the device's memory (they can be saved forcibly).

In standby mode, the name of the person from whom the message came is not displayed, the name can only be viewed when the message is loaded.

Voice Message is a variant of MMS where you record a voice message up to 3 minutes 6 seconds long (maximum length) and then send it immediately. This is a simplified version of MMS for the mass user.

< tr>

Email

The device has a built-in mail client, it works with APOP/POP3/SMTP/IMAP4 protocols. The client is written in Java and starts within 3-4 seconds. The fact that the client is essentially a separate application dictates a separate menu and folder structure. In addition to the standard folders Inbox, Sent, Outbox, there are three folders of their own, in which you can sort correspondence and store it. You cannot create more folders. There is also a Spam folder, it contains messages that match the filter rules you set, for example, from certain addresses. Considering the amount of spam that is circulating on the net, this is a pleasant measure, but useless. Fighting spam on a phone is almost impossible, and it's hard to set up rules on a mobile phone. Still, the device is used as an email client on the run, that is, from time to time.

Various encodings for the Russian language are supported, the default is the standard Windows encoding 1251. For each individual message, you can choose your own encoding, which is nice (UTF-8, KOI8-R, Windows-1251). Attachments of any files are supported, it is possible to view the file structure of the phone from the client.

Outgoing and incoming mail settings are separated. You can limit the number of received messages (no more than 150), get only the headers, and set the mail to be deleted on the server after it has been fully downloaded to the phone. The maximum size of a received message cannot exceed 300 KB, which is small for most consumers.

Call lists

The phone has three lists - received, missed, made calls. Each list can contain up to 20 entries. Already in the list itself, the date of the call and its time are displayed, which is convenient. From idle mode, pressing the send call key displays the consolidated call list. This is much more convenient than the list of last dialed numbers, which was the default in the devices of the third edition.

< tr>

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/review/image/nokia/7500-prism/img/scr/log/log7.jpg"/>

When you view the details of an individual call, you can also see its duration.

The lists also contain a menu listing all the numbers to which messages are sent, there is a counter of messages of various types, calls, as well as a record of the amount of received and transmitted data.

Settings

Profiles can be activated from this menu or quickly turned on by pressing the on/off key. Each profile can be activated temporarily, at a set interval, and then switch to the default profile. Sound signals can be configured for all events, an incoming call - for all calls or for certain user groups. It is possible to set whether the video will work with an incoming call or it will be prohibited for the current profile. Implementation of profiles in Nokia phones is one of the best on the market. You can also assign your own sounds to the opening of the device (for sliders, clamshells, as well as rotate models), as well as to its closing (the image component tested by Korean manufacturers is also used here). In total, the phone has five profiles installed by the manufacturer, and two user profiles. Each profile, however, lends itself to any changes, up to renaming it.

< /tbody>

The phone has an automatic keypad lock, you can also set a special security code so that no one can use your phone. For accessories, it is possible to set the initial behavior of the device, for example, select a profile that is activated when a headset or charger is connected. An interesting feature that allows you to fine-tune the device according to your ideas about what you need.

When you turn on your phone, you may be prompted to turn on Flight Mode, which is disabled by default. There is no need for it, since the corresponding profile is present in the list of standard ones.

For the screen, you can choose a keeper in the form of an analog clock, digital, set the operating time. You can also set a slideshow of your own photos, then they will change at a specified interval.

Connections

This subsection includes all settings related to the operation of Bluetooth, infrared, packet data transfer (GPRS, EDGE), and data synchronization.

IR port can be enabled and only, no other settings are provided.

Bluetooth settings are more intricate, the device can be in a mode visible to other devices, it can be hidden or visible for a limited amount of time. For connected devices, you can set the automatic pairing mode, in this mode the phone will try to connect with another device without prompting. The disadvantages include the fact that sometimes the connection is not established, and then the phone in endless mode reports this every three minutes. It's annoying.

< /tbody>

USB connection is supported in USB Mass Storage mode (memory card visible), as well as PC Sync (synchronization with PC).

In the Data transfer section, you can configure the settings for synchronizing the device with a computer, a remote server, for a general consumer, not using

  • JSR-82, Bluetooth version 1.1 with OBEX support;
  • Mobile Media API (JSR-135), including support for device keys;
  • JSR-172, web applications and services, includes the Remote Procedure Package;
  • JSR-177, Security and Trust Services API, including SATSA-CRYPTO, which allows applications to use encryption;
  • JSR-234, support for 3D audio and music in applications;

By priority, the video is higher than the photo, and, accordingly, it is played exactly (for the name, you can save both the photo and the video at the same time).

Settings

It is possible to set whether the video will work with an incoming call or it will be prohibited for the current profile. Implementation of profiles in Nokia phones is one of the best on the market. In total, the phone has five profiles installed by the manufacturer, and two user profiles. Each profile, however, lends itself to any changes, up to renaming it.

The phone has an automatic keypad lock, you can also set a special security code so that no one can use your phone. For accessories, it is possible to set the initial behavior of the device, for example, select a profile that is activated when a headset or charger is connected.

USB connection is supported in USB Mass Storage mode (memory card visible), as well as PC Sync (synchronization with PC).

In the Data transfer section, you can configure the settings for synchronizing the device with a computer, a remote server, for a general consumer, not using
