Smart watches are useless, but I bought them anyway

In this article there will be several reasons why smartwatches could not become my favorite gadget, although a few use cases were found.

Today, on the day I write this text, the Apple Watch Series 3 on my arm is exactly 7 months old. During this time, I have not found any serious use in them, and if something happens to them, then I will not worry a bit. And I'm not likely to buy a device like this again. In this material, there will be several reasons why smart watches could not become my favorite gadget, although a few use cases were still found.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Purchase history

I'm just sure that in the comments under this text someone will write something like “these apple people are snickering, buying everything, even unnecessary, because it's Apple”, so I'll start with the history of buying this gadget.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

I got my first experience with smartwatches in 2013, and it was the first generation of Sony SmartWatch. In fact, it was a buggy thing with a not very responsive screen, which still needed to get used to: the fact is that activating the screen with a movement of the wrist worked only when the watch was at a certain and not quite familiar angle, and even with a delay of a second at one and a half. There was really no use for the watch, they worked terribly slowly, constantly buggy, and thank Sony engineers for what they did, probably the most unfortunate way in the world to connect the charger: the cable had to be placed in a special place and fixed with a clothespin on the watch case. After a couple of months, the clothespin spring weakened, and in order to charge the watch, you had to either put books on top or use an elastic band for bills.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

A month later, I spat and took them back to the store, where the defect was recognized as warranty and the money was returned to me. Thank you for this engineers. Since then, I have not even thought about buying a smartwatch, mindful of this bad experience, and have used an all-analogue watch from the Danish company Skagen, bought at some kind of sale at a good discount.

But Skagen is by no means Patek Philippe or even TAG Heuer, so something happened to them after 4 years of continuous wear. Replacing the battery did not help, and since this watch was pretty tired, I decided to look for something to replace it instead of repairing it. It was not possible to find something attractive and interesting in a budget of up to 30,000 rubles, and therefore I decided to give smart watches a chance again, thinking that they would still show the time, but maybe some of the smart chips would come in handy ...

The reasons why they annoy me (and sometimes those around me)

Notifications. My colleagues often list the ability to receive notifications as one of the main advantages of the Apple Watch and smartwatches in general. But if you actively use your smartphone and you have more than 10 third-party applications installed, then at some point there are a lot of notifications, and you go to the settings to cut them off from half of the applications. After some time, the bowl overflows again, and you repeat the procedure. It gets boring eventually.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

It's easier with a smartphone in this regard - put it on the table and let it vibrate for itself. If someone calls, you will understand it immediately, and notifications in messengers, mail or somewhere else in 99% of cases do not require an instant response. You sit and go about your business without being distracted.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

It won't work like that with a watch: you have to look at the time somewhere, and taking them off and on every now and then is also not an option, so they hammer on the wrist without stopping. I had to master the Do Not Disturb mode, but it also has a problem: you periodically forget to turn off this mode when you are waiting for an important call or message, and this is already fraught with some problems. I had already missed urgent messages and calls from the couriers who stood at the door, and also disrupted several important meetings. Such things.

Notifications 2. There is another subtle issue with notifications that can make you uncomfortable. Just imagine: you are sitting at a meeting, talking. And it doesn’t matter if you have a business conversation or a nice conversation with a friend. When your smartphone vibrates in your pocket, it is often somehow inconvenient to get it out and be distracted from the conversation, and when you have another display right behind your wrist, it takes one second to look at the notification on it, and in your head it seems to be absolutely okay.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

It will only seem to your interlocutor that you are constantly looking at your watch, and therefore, you are bored or you are in a hurry somewhere. I did not notice this trap until I came to a meeting with a person who also had an Apple Watch. Even I, a user of exactly the same gadget, at first subconsciously thought that a person was in a hurry somewhere, and it was time for us to wrap up, what can we say about other people.

Charging. Apple Watch needs to be charged frequently, though a little less often than a smartphone. But it’s one thing when both devices can be connected to a power outlet at night (many people have already developed such a habit), and it’s quite another when you can’t leave the clock on charge at night, since it’s on them that you “start” the alarm clock. In addition, I use a sleep tracker that monitors the quality of rest (well, you need to somehow use the smart functions of the device). I had to develop another habit - leave the watch on charge in the evening before going to the shower, and then put it back on.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Stained and scratched. Apple Watches with ION-X glass (I don't know about the steel versions) are constantly getting smudged and picking up scratches. You have to wipe them 2-3 times a day to make the watch look at least somehow presentable, and put up with the appearance of more and more scratches.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Apps take a long time to load and are useless. After 7 months with the Apple Watch, I still don't understand why they make apps for them. Take, for example, branded applications of Sberbank and MTS. They load so slowly that it will probably be faster to call the hotline to find out the balance on the card or the rest of the packages on the tariff. And so with most of the programs, which, in fact, are made in order to simply be. The only exceptions are built-in applications (they are just well thought out) and several third-party ones like Stocard, Shazam and Yandex.Translate, and they do not start up instantly.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought The smart watch is useless, but I bought it anyway

Straps and their prices. No matter what anyone says about a standard silicone strap and its hypoallergenicity, everything is individual. For example, I get irritated by it, so I had to look towards alternatives. I was surprised to find that the original Milanese loop costs 12,000 rubles. Too much, I thought about the price of half the cost of the watch, and bought a fake one. Everything in it is good, only the magnet is weak, you have to correct it every now and then. If you had a positive experience of buying a non-original Milanese hinge with a good magnet, please share it in the comments.

Calculation of training indicators. And now let's digress a little from everyday life and talk about the other side of using the Apple Watch, since it is also a sports device. The only sport I do regularly is swimming. Naturally, immediately after buying the watch, I began to go to the pool with them and try the related features of this gadget. But even here the clock upset me, since the calculation of the distance works correctly only every other time. Either one track will not be counted, then on the contrary, the extra one will attribute, so rely completely on them in this path is impossible - you have to count in your mind when the cherished kilometer will be sailed. Empirically, we managed to find out that the distance is calculated by the movements of the hands, which means that exercises when only the legs work are not taken into account. I don’t know about other types of training, but swimming is such a disaster.

Things you still like about them

I've told you about the annoying factors, it's time to talk about the positive ones, because, despite all the claims, something still smooths out my experience using the Apple Watch. So.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Weather at a glance. Of all the watch faces, I chose Modular, and here I am not original: I see this on four out of five Apple Watch users. And this is the most convenient and fastest way to find out the weather for the day before leaving the house. Just looked at the clock and in a second we know how to dress. The dial shows both the current temperature and the range for the day, as well as information about precipitation or its absence. On the iPhone, the device must first be unlocked, then go to the Weather application, and then scroll the forecast from left to right - it takes 10 seconds, which is 10 times slower than viewing the weather on the watch.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Stealth alarm. I sleep in the same bedroom with my wife and two small children, and I get up much earlier than them. Before the advent of the Apple Watch, I had to put my smartphone with an alarm clock under my pillow, but even in the “only vibration” mode, either my children or my wife woke up with me. Now I set an alarm clock on my watch and sleep right in it. The alarm clock on the watch works autonomously from the smartphone, and this is a big plus.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Music control. The watch helps to control music in two cases: when I listen to it through Airpods, the control options of which are rather poor, and when I drive (music is played from a smartphone via Bluetooth-AUX- receiver, so you can’t switch tracks with regular buttons). I've even seen some drivers attach their Apple Watch directly to the steering wheel, although I haven't tried it myself. So in the case of music, the second display on the wrist is very useful.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Apple Pay. Paying in stores for hours is extremely convenient - you don’t have to go anywhere and don’t have to get anything. Although with the advent of cold weather it has become easier to get a smartphone out of your pocket than to find a watch under a layer of winter clothes. But no one bothers to alternate these two methods, depending on what is more convenient at a particular moment.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Flashlight. Among the icons in the control center of the watch is a flashlight, and I use it regularly. It works according to the simplest principle: the display turns on solid white, and the backlight is turned to the maximum. This is quite enough to navigate in complete darkness, besides, both hands remain free, unlike using a flashlight on a smartphone. Convenient.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

Conclusions

As you can see, annoying factors look much more serious than positive ones, but due to the presence of the latter, I have not yet got rid of smartwatches. The next time I'm going to put them on the bulletin board, I remember that an analog clock will only show the time and, possibly, the date, but after all, there are additional advantages, albeit not too significant.

Smartwatches are useless, but I don't care bought

I also want to conclude by saying that my experience may not be the most revealing. Your usage pattern for your Apple Watch or other smartwatch may be much more than that. And it's good when some device will be more useful for you than for others.

Convenient.

I also want to conclude by saying that my experience may not be the most revealing. Your usage pattern for your Apple Watch or other smartwatch may be much more than that. And it's good when some device will be more useful for you than for others.

Purchase history

I'm just sure that in the comments under this text someone will write something like “these apple people are snickering, buying everything, even unnecessary, because it's Apple”, so I'll start with the history of buying this gadget.

The reasons why they annoy me (and sometimes others)

Notifications. My colleagues often list the ability to receive notifications as one of the main advantages of the Apple Watch and smartwatches in general. But if you actively use your smartphone and you have more than 10 third-party applications installed, then at some point there are a lot of notifications, and you go to the settings to cut them off from half of the applications. After some time, the bowl overflows again, and you repeat the procedure. It gets boring eventually.

It is easier with a smartphone in this regard - put it on the table and let it vibrate for itself. If someone calls, you will understand it immediately, and notifications in messengers, mail or somewhere else in 99% of cases do not require an instant response. You sit and go about your business without being distracted.

There is one more non-obvious problem with notifications that can make you uncomfortable.

Charging. Apple Watch needs to be charged often, albeit a little less often than a smartphone.

Stained and scratched. Apple Watch with ION-X glass (I don’t know about the steel versions) constantly get smudged and collect scratches. You have to wipe them 2-3 times a day to make the watch look at least somehow presentable, and put up with the appearance of more and more scratches.

Apps take a long time to load and are useless. After 7 months with the Apple Watch, I still do not understand why they make applications for them.

Straps and their prices. No matter what anyone says about the standard silicone strap and its hypoallergenicity, everything is individual.

And now let's digress a little from everyday life and talk about the other side of the Apple Watch, since this device is also sports. The only sport I do regularly is swimming. Naturally, immediately after buying the watch, I began to go to the pool with them and try the related features of this gadget. But even here the clock upset me, since the calculation of the distance works correctly only every other time. It won’t count one track, then, on the contrary, it will add an extra one, so you can’t rely completely on them in this path - you have to count in your mind when the cherished kilometer will swim.

So.

Weather at a glance. Of all the watch faces, I chose Modular, and here I am not original: I see this in four out of five Apple Watch users.

Stealth alarm clock.

Music control. The watch helps to control music in two cases: when I listen to it through Airpods, the control options of which are rather poor, and when I drive (music is played from a smartphone via a Bluetooth AUX receiver, so you can’t switch tracks with regular buttons).
