Skoda Octavia test. Modern liftback

The Skoda Octavia liftback is quite popular in the vastness of our country. The model is consistently included in the ratings of the best-selling cars in the Russian market. So, according to Avtostat, at the end of 2020, Octavia entered the TOP-10 best-selling cars of European brands, and also appeared in the top twenty among all the best-selling new cars. True, it is worth noting that with the latest TOP-20, the liftback is not doing so well, since the model took only the penultimate line of the rating, and even showed a drop in sales by more than 20% in 2020. But in general, such a change can be explained by the pandemic, which affected absolutely all market players, and Octavia also had a generational change last year. Yes, the official premiere of the fourth generation Skoda Octavia took place at the end of 2019, but the model appeared on our market in 2020, which was not the most successful for sales. But, as you can see, even such difficulties did not prevent liftback sales, even if they were significantly reduced. It is also worth mentioning that Octavia is quite in demand not only in the new car market, but also in the secondary market, where the model is consistently among the top ten best-selling used cars.

Having retained the body features common with its predecessor, the fourth generation of Octavia turned out to be more rapid and modern, apparently, the company's designers tried to make the car attractive to a young audience. A slightly more pointed front end with a sloping hood, narrow matrix headlights (optional), which provide good visibility at night, besides, they can highlight turns, a slightly smaller grille and a greater inclination of the A-pillars, all this makes the silhouette of the sedan somehow sporty and slightly futuristic. By the way, I can easily imagine this generation in a coupe body, such a decision will obviously suit him.

The stern of the car was also a success for the designers of the brand, it became light thanks to the new elongated LED optics, in the spirit of the latest Skoda models. Some charm adds a fold in the trunk area, which looks like a kind of rear spoiler. In general, for my taste, the Czechs turned out to be an interesting liftback in the spirit of the times, which should be of interest to a young audience. If the previous generation Octavia, in my opinion, looked boring and faded, then the new one came out very curious and bright enough.

The interior design in the new Skoda Octavia is perhaps even more interesting than the exterior, the creators of the car tried to make the interior as light and spacious as possible, and they succeeded, although they had to sacrifice some convenient options. Yes, we have already seen a similar steering wheel with comfortable keys and scroll wheels in the new Skoda Rapid, but in Octavia it has become even more interesting, as it has lost its lower spoke. The front panel is straight in appearance, but has small smooth curves that emphasize decorative elements, besides, there are no unnecessary details on it except for air ducts and one row of keys. And the screen of the media system is very neat, as if placed on it, and it does not look alien here. We also see an interesting solution on the doors, chrome-plated thin moldings go into comfortable door handles, it looks nice. The Czechs also abandoned the classic gear selector, thereby freeing up space below. Instead of the usual “poker” or joystick, we see a miniature switch, which, for my taste, does not look very good, but it is convenient to use and does not catch the eye. There are no complaints about the quality of materials, all that is in our field of vision is soft plastic and even artificial suede. Yes, below, on the same doors, harsh plastic is already used, but still it does not catch the eye, and it is not quite budgetary either. It's nice to see in the Octavia and atmospheric lighting, although not as bright and saturated as in the premium Germans, as well as LED interior lighting, with touch-sensitive on/off reading lights.

The landing in the liftback is comfortable, the longitudinal adjustment of the seat for tall drivers is enough even with a margin, as well as the steering wheel reach adjustment, which, however, in some cases will overlap the uppermost part of the dashboard in the area of the turn signal indicators. The chairs are cool both in appearance and fit, with a good profile and pronounced lateral support, even if the pillow is a little more straight, it would be very good. But in general, it’s not bad, the forced march for 300 km went wonderfully and I didn’t feel much fatigue during the trip and after that. Perhaps the seats will not be as comfortable for large people, but I can’t say for sure. In the test car, the front seats were electrically adjustable, including lumbar support adjustment in one plane and with memory for two people. The upholstery in our case was a combination of leather and Alcantara, quite pleasant tactile and practical.

In terms of visibility, there are no special questions for the car, except that the side mirrors are too small, but the blind spot monitoring system saves the situation. Helps the review back in bad weather and the rear wiper, which cleans a large area of glass.

TCL TW30 MoveAudio S600 TWS headphones review

Any decent smartphone manufacturer is bound to offer their own TWS headset with them. So TCL introduced in December on the Russian market not only a flagship smartphone, but also a flagship headset. Let's see what happened ...

I sit behind myself with a height of 187 cm without much difficulty, there is a margin to the back of the front seat, there is space below for legs, and the roof does not press. The child also felt quite free and comfortable behind me. Isofix mounts are located in the car along the edges of the rear sofa, where they are hidden under special non-removable plastic covers, and they are also between the front passenger seat cushions. Installing a child seat is easy and fast, the manufacturer has thought of this moment. If a chair is installed at the back, then only one adult can freely accommodate there. Two, and three with a child, on the back sofa will no longer be comfortable. If there is no chair, then three passengers will sit quite freely in the back, although the one who is in the center will not be as comfortable as the others. In the backs of the front seats, a standard pocket is available for passengers, as well as a special pocket for a smartphone.

Since we have a liftback Skoda Octavia, it has a fairly roomy trunk, the volume of which is an impressive 578 liters, which is 20 liters more than its predecessor. From the passenger compartment or immediately from the luggage compartment, you can fold the backs of the rear sofa separately, which form an almost flat floor and thereby get 1,533 liters of usable space. The trunk of the Octavia has a regular shape, with convenient large niches on the sides, built-in folding hooks for packages, a large number of nets and a convenient underground organizer, so you can place the maximum amount of luggage in it without any problems. Under the floor, in our case, there was a stowaway, but in some versions there may be a full-size spare tire. In the fourth generation of Skoda Octavia, an electric tailgate is optionally available, but, unfortunately, there is no option to completely close the car immediately from it.

The media system in our case was the newest Columbus with a 10-inch IPS touch screen, in other configurations it will be different solutions. The system display in our case had a high resolution, if I'm not mistaken 1280x640 pixels, quite bright and contrasty, with a good response. The speed of the system also did not cause any complaints, yes, there was a slight thoughtfulness in some moments, but in general it was not bad. The drawing of the menu is not the most beautiful on the market, but all the icons are clear and well read. It is possible to change the wallpaper on the main screen, you are offered to choose from a decent list, there is both a plain background and images with calm patterns.

The system has its own navigation with up-to-date maps, which can build very correct routes, but it does not work with traffic jams. Entering the address is carried out with a convenient virtual keyboard or with the help of a voice assistant. By the way, for unknown reasons, our voice assistant turned on on its own, and during the test I did not figure out what it was reacting to and why it was activated on its own. If you don't need built-in navigation, then the system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay platforms, the latter with wireless connectivity. And in the parking lot, MirrorLink display duplication is available.

The Columbus media system can be updated online, for data transfer you can use the built-in 4G modem with eSIM support or connect the car to a WiFi access point. Of course, if you have an active eSIM, the system itself can act as an access point and distribute the Internet to passengers in the cabin.

The most important widgets are placed on the main screen of the system, the largest of which is given to navigation. On the second screen, you can collect a grid of the most frequently used system functions for quick access to them yourself.

From the interesting points, I note that Columbus has the ability to control gestures, without touching the display, but this type of control has not worked for us, but this is clearly related to a specific car. The touch strip under the screen in the form of a groove is a volume control, it is convenient to work with it, although at first it is unusual.

Men\'s Sneakers

In the fourth generation, the Skoda Octavia optionally received a 10.2-inch virtual dashboard with a high-quality picture and high resolution. It's nice that in a Czech car, digital tidy is not used simply as a tribute to fashion, but as part of the media complex, you can interact with a fairly large set of information from it. The Octavia has four types of panels that can be quickly changed on the go, and without taking your hands off the steering wheel, you can work with various information on the right and left sides of the dashboard. You can choose from three backgrounds that are calm enough not to distract your attention. It is interesting that such a moment is made that service information from the on-board computer, for example, warnings, is displayed on the left side of the display, and data on an outgoing / incoming call on the right. In three types of panel, a large digital speedometer is displayed on the screen, the data from which is easy to read, only in the fourth version, it is small, since in this case the navigation map is displayed on the entire display.

Octavia uses a modern Type-C connector to connect devices, three are located in the front of the cabin, one of them is to the right of the mirror, which is convenient to use for the DVR, and two more are available at the rear. And also a standard socket is available for rear passengers, but this is an option. There is also wireless charging according to the Qi standard in the car, a large platform is located at the bottom of the front panel and even a large smartphone will fit on it. In simpler versions, there will be a regular rubberized shelf in place of wireless charging. Modern gadgets are charged from the car's on-board network quite quickly, so even during a short trip it is possible to replenish the charge even on a completely dead device.

The connection of smartphones via Bluetooth occurs without any difficulties, two smartphones can be connected to the system at the same time. The speakerphone works perfectly, your interlocutor will not only hear well those sitting in front, but also the passengers in the back.

There was a complete set of electronic driver assistants in our car. I note the perfectly working adaptive cruise control, it can also work in traffic jams, which, in conjunction with the tracking and lane keeping system, allows you to enjoy long-distance trips. As a useful bonus, it is worth noting the emergency braking system in front of obstacles. Of the oddities, I will only note that a couple of times the car turned off all options, warning about this on the dashboard. And once it was in the rain, when, in theory, all the sensors should have been clean on the contrary (it was outside the city, where there is much less dirt), and the second time on a completely sunny day. But in both cases, after a while, the system itself returned to normal, the assistants became available and worked properly. In addition, our car had a blind spot monitoring system with large indicator lights in the mirror housings that can be seen in peripheral vision even before you turn your head. And also there was a system of automatic parallel and perpendicular parking, it worked well, but sometimes for some reason missed empty spaces.Of course, the car had parking sensors in a circle, with a visual picture on the display of the media system and an audible warning, which was complemented by a very good rear-view camera with markings and a washer. The parking sensors are also linked to the reversing assistance system, which informs about perpendicularly moving objects. Moreover, it is nice that the data from the sensors and the camera are simultaneously displayed on the display and you do not need to switch from it to the dashboard, as in some cars, and you immediately see all the necessary information in one place. Not without a light and rain sensor. If there are no questions about the second, then the first one worked strangely, at the right time, turning on the lighting and switching the displays to night mode, but back, sometimes it didn’t switch itself.

According to the comfort options in the car, three-zone climate control is available as an additional equipment, the control of which, however, is placed on the screen of the media system, which, in my opinion, is not the most convenient solution. A physical climate unit would have been much better, but in the new Octavia it was sacrificed for design. In automatic mode, the climate control works well, only at the start it turns on very strong airflow, so if it annoys you, you will have to manually adjust the temperature or select airflow zones. Yes, a separate climate control unit is available for rear passengers with convenient controls, its own screen and, of course, separate deflectors. Of the interesting innovations, it is worth mentioning "Smart Climate Control", in which Skoda renamed the usual options for the climate system, designating them with simple and understandable names. And from the controversial points, I will note the deflectors of the central air ducts in the front, which are lowered too low, so that they blow either in your stomach or in your arm.

In addition, the Skoda Octavia has a three-level heating of the entire surface of the steering wheel, with a dedicated button on the steering wheel itself, as well as a three-level heating of the front seats, which is activated on the main screen of the media system. For rear passengers, a three-level separate heating of the rear seats with separate power buttons is also offered as an option. Optionally, you can order a full heated windshield.

In terms of overall comfort, the car was a little disappointing. No, it's not bad, just with such an appearance, with such an interior, you expect more. And so the new Skoda Octavia is still a bit noisy, you are constantly haunted by the sound from the wheels and aerodynamic noise, although it is worth saying that on the highway you can calmly talk to passengers without raising your voice. The suspension copes well with small and medium bumps, although not perfect, but on large ones it can well plump with the rear beam. But in general, for its class, Octavia, according to these criteria, is not the worst and even outperforms some competitors.

In Russia, the fourth generation Skoda Octavia is available with a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 110 hp, which comes in conjunction with a six-speed automatic. The middle version is a 1.4 turbocharged engine with a capacity of 150 hp, which is offered in conjunction with either a six-speed manual or, in our case, an eight-speed automatic. And at the top is a two-liter turbocharged engine with 190 hp, which is offered with a seven-speed DSG robotic box.

Version 1.4 TSI in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic showed itself well. According to passport data, such a car accelerates to 100 km / h in exactly 9 seconds. Engine power is enough for comfortable driving in the city and for overtaking on the highway. The box works smoothly and predictably. For those who like to "drive" there is a sport mode in which the reaction to the gas pedal is aggravated, the steering wheel becomes heavier, and the box keeps the downshift longer. The car is good to drive, with precise reactions to the steering wheel, with minimal roll in the corners, so if you want, you can get a little frisky on it. In general, the Skoda Octavia performed well both in the city and on the highway, a pleasant and completely understandable car to drive.

Fuel consumption on the highway I got in the region of 5.6 liters per 100 km, with 4.7 liters declared by the manufacturer. In the city, the consumption rose to 8.1-9.5 liters per 100 km, with the declared 7 liters. There is also a start-stop system in the new Skoda Octavia, which, although it works softly, you need to hold the brake with it properly, since when starting it can significantly jerk the car. This option can be disabled, but this can only be done from the screen of the media system by pulling out the curtain with quick settings from above.

Prices for the fourth generation Skoda Octavia in Russia start at 1,515,000 rubles, while the price of a test car in the Style Plus version with a set of additional options and packages was 2,248,000 rubles. The new prices, of course, are high, some competitors are still sold cheaper, but the Octavia turned out to be quite an interesting and modern car, offering a large number of useful and technological options.

Skoda Octavia test. Modern liftback

The Skoda Octavia liftback is quite popular in the vastness of our country. The model is consistently included in the ratings of the best-selling cars in the Russian market. So, according to Avtostat, at the end of 2020, Octavia entered the TOP-10 of the best-selling cars of European brands, and also appeared in the top twenty among all the best-selling new cars. True, it is worth noting that with the latest TOP-20, the liftback is not doing so well, since the model took only the penultimate line of the rating, and even showed a drop in sales by more than 20% in 2020. But in general, such a change can be explained by a pandemic that affected absolutely all market players, and Octavia also had a generational change last year.
