Presentation of new devices supporting NVIDIA 3D Vision
You have probably already heard about 3D Vision glasses from NVIDIA, you probably read a lot of reviews of our colleagues on other resources. I'll also assume that many people have come to the following conclusion: for full-fledged 3D entertainment, you will need to buy not only a set with glasses, but also a new monitor (plus a new video card for some). In conclusion, it is not very clear what the situation is with content, support from developers. Finally, the time has come when NVIDIA is ready to tell what will happen to the 3D stereo project in the near future, and most importantly, the company assures that they are preparing a bright future for their project, and next year we will have a bunch of devices that leave no room for doubt about success.
Let me remind you of the main components of the 3D Vision system: an NVIDIA video card, a set of glasses and a receiver, as well as a monitor (until recently, only a monitor) supporting 120 Hz.
Here's the step-by-step principle: each image is rendered twice, once for the right eye and once for the left, offset from the first. From the video card, this information is transmitted to a monitor operating at a frequency of 120 Hz. Thus, odd frames are transmitted for the left eye, and even frames for the right. The 3D glasses synchronize with the monitor, opening and closing the right and left lenses in accordance with the frame rate (60 Hz per lens), thus creating the illusion of a stereoscopic image and allowing you to feel like a participant in a video game. The glasses are powered by a special battery-powered IR transmitter that connects to a PC via a USB port.
The devices described below belong to the second generation of 3D Vision capable devices. This is not only and not so much about increasing comfort, but about expanding the scope of use: movies and photos can now be added to games.
Fujifilm has introduced a camera capable of taking stereo 3D photographs. On the one hand, the FinePix REAL 3D W1 is the most common camera, with a 3x optical zoom and a 10 megapixel matrix. If not for one BUT - the camera has two lenses. They are used to shoot two almost identical frames taken with a shift. The resulting two images are processed electronically, and at Dogs & Puppies in Nigeria the result is a three-dimensional image. It is also noteworthy that during shooting, two pictures are recorded in the camera's memory at once: 3D in a special format and a regular picture in JPEG. Due to the presence of two lenses at once, you can set different settings for the frame of each lens, with different magnifications, using different effects (one frame will be normal, the other, for example, sepia). I think such a "trick" will be interesting for preparing pictures for the subsequent editing of the HDR version of the photo.
In theory, everything is fine, but when it is necessary to bring the entire cycle "shooting - printed image" to life, various problems arise. For example, the implementation of a service for Russian users. At the moment, the resulting photos can be printed exclusively in the UK, after which they will be delivered to Russia by regular mail. The cost of one picture is 5-7 euros. The price of the camera itself is about 20 thousand rubles, which, you see, is quite a lot for a 10-megapixel device. Distribution companies also understand this and plan to carry out only a trial purchase of devices in the amount of fifty pieces. And they will see how it goes.
The resulting photos can be viewed both on a computer and on laptops or projectors, of course, supporting 3D Vision technology. The presentation also featured FinePix REAL 3D v1. On the screen with a diagonal of 8 inches (resolution 600x400), photos can be viewed without additional accessories.
Viewsonic showed the second generation of its monitors that support 3D Vision. Model VX2268wm has a diagonal of 22 inches and a resolution of 1680x1050. Other characteristics: contrast - 20000:1, response time - 5 ms, interface DVD-D Dual link. Viewsonic is also ready to offer a series of projectors, which includes models: DLP SVGA projector PJD5111, XGA models PJD6211, PJD6221/41/51, PJD5351, PJD6381.
The monitor from Samsung, model Syncmaster 2233RZ, also has a screen diagonal of 22 inches and a resolution of 1680x1050. The monitor stood quietly on the sidelines and did not stand out in any way. It was necessary simply to declare its existence.
Asus showed off the first laptop equipped with everything you need to use NVIDIA 3D Vision technology.
As the name implies, the G60J-3D model belongs to the gaming series. The laptop has the corresponding filling: Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 260M video card with 1 GB DDR3 video memory, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, screen diagonal is 16 inches, resolution is 1366x768. In the tradition of gaming laptops, the keyboard in the G60J-3D has separate keys, as well as backlighting, the Altec Lansing audio system supports EAX Advanced HD 4.0 3D and CMSS technologies. In addition to the obligatory glasses and a 3D Vision receiver, the kit includes a backpack and a Razer mouse, and a 64-bit Windows7 operating system is preinstalled. A gaming laptop is not particularly cheap - the price is planned to be around 60-70 thousand rubles, the start of sales is early next year.
In the future, laptops from other manufacturers are also planned to be released, a model from MSI was mentioned at the event.
Acer pleased with the demonstration of the first FullHD-monitor (maximum resolution - 1920x1080). The Acer GD245HQ is a great 24-inch monitor with orange colored legs reminiscent of Acer's Predator gaming PC, also in orange. This orange couple was used to demonstrate the capabilities of 3D Vision.

Acer GD245HQ will go on sale in Russia in February 2010, the estimated price will be 14990 rubles.
Acer also introduced three new 3D projectors.
The most interesting, in my opinion, of the models shown was the Acer H5360. This HD-ready (720p, 1280x720) DLP projector has HDMI and 3D Vision technology. Other specs you should be aware of: Brightness 2500 ANSI Lumens, Contrast Ratio 3200:1. The appearance on sale is expected in January next year at a price of 35,990 rubles.
The other two projectors featured are the Acer X1261 and X1130P models. These new products do not have much worse performance, but the lack of HDMI and XGA (1024x768) resolution in the X1261 model and SVGA (800x600) in the X1130P projector upset a little. The brightness performance of the two projectors is the same at 2500 ANSI lumens, while the contrast ratio is higher for the first model - 3700:1 versus 3000:1 for the X1130P.
These two 3D Vision DLP projectors will also be available in the first month of next year. The prices are as follows: 28490 rubles for the X1261 and 20990 rubles for the X1130P projector.
Most of us have come across 3D technology in theaters; More and more cinema chains are equipping their halls with new digital projectors, which makes it possible to enjoy modern computer cartoons in 3D. Judging by the reports of movie companies, not a single 3D project has yet been unprofitable, and each new film / cartoon brought profit to the companies involved in showing such pictures.
It turns out that people love such entertainment in absentia and are ready to spend extra money. And if there is interest, there will be an offer. The novelties presented today demonstrate the beginning of the movement of stereo technologies into the homes of buyers, technologies are moving towards consumers.
The most significant news of the upcoming development of 3D can be considered the support from Hollywood and the emergence of Blu-Ray-discs that support the technology. The standardization of the technology will happen in just a few days, and you can expect the appearance of Blu-Ray with 3D support as early as 2010.
Such companies as Corel, the developer of the WinDVD player, ArcSoft - TotalMedia Theater, have already announced their support for home 3D, Cyberlink also promises full support for 3D Vision in its PowerDVD Ultra program.
Many people have probably wondered what accelerators will support 3D Blu-Ray, and how much will it cost? Here's NVIDIA's answer: The AVC Multi-View Codec (or AVC-MVC) was used to encode 3D content, a codec that should become the basis for encoding 3D content for Blu-ray discs. 3D Blu-ray content encoded with AVC-MVC can be decoded in real time on select NVIDIA GPUs. GPUs capable of decoding 3D Blu-ray content include the GeForce GT 240 (estimated price $100) as well as the upcoming next generation GF100 processors based on NVIDIA's “Fermi” architecture. Users can build low-cost PCs with 3D Vision glasses for less than $1000, which will be the ideal platform for 3D Blu-ray movies, 3D photos, 3D websites and over 400 3D games.
