Photo test of current smartphones 2013

Shooting conditions

Almost all photos were taken on smartphones in automatic mode (the touch focus was not used, and the Sony Xperia Z was set to "Smart Mode"), with automatic white balance, standard settings for sharpness, color reproduction and at maximum quality. Where it was possible to turn on optical or electronic stabilization in the settings, we turned it on. Each frame was filmed on the phone cameras from one position with a minimum time interval (about 5 seconds). We did not try to achieve the perfect photo (for example, using a tripod), because the average person probably will not bother with a mobile camera so much: the standard photography scheme is to take out a gadget, start the camera and shoot.

Daytime shooting

The first test we did was done on a sunny day around noon (13:00-15:00).

Лучший снимок получился на Samsung Galaxy S4: минимальное количество артефактов, высокая детализация, отсутствие «мыла» на краях кадра (правда, у него один из самых узких углов), максимально естественный баланс белого. Близко к снимкам SGS4 оказались кадры, выполненные на Nokia 808, с одной оговоркой: немного привирал баланс белого – фотографии приобретали немного холодноватый оттенок. Кстати, кадры на 808 были сделаны в режиме PureView. Откровенно говоря, мы были удивлены, что снимки с Samsung вышли не хуже, чем снимки с Nokia.

Third place was shared by Galaxy Note II, HTC Butterfly and iPhone. The difference is small, but gadgets from Apple and HTC produced a slightly more natural white balance. Smartphones Nokia 920 and Sony Xperia Z shot about the same. Frames on HTC One have digital artifacts, high sharpness (not to be confused with sharpness) and the lowest resolution. The Meizu MX2 device produced a weak picture: low definition, wrong white balance.

The photos below were taken in GUM ("Main Department Store"). Despite the fact that the day was sunny and it was quite light inside, the conditions for the cameras were not the best.

В данном тесте вперед снова вышел Samsung Galaxy S4 и с минимальным отрывом - Nokia 808. Интересно, что Nokia решила немного увеличить ISO и уменьшить выдержку (ISO 100, 1/100), а Samsung уменьшил ISO и увеличил выдержку (ISO 64, 1/50).

Далее по качеству изображения поставил бы iPhone 5, потом Note II, а за ними HTC Butterfly. The HTC One was the hardest to evaluate because it has the lowest resolution of any device tested. Despite the narrow dynamic range, the photos came out almost noise-free and very sharp. If you try to squeeze One among the devices, then in this case HTC will stand between the iPhone 5 and Galaxy Note II.

The most pleasing bokeh (a term describing the subjective artistic merits of parts of an image that are out of focus in a photo) turned out to be in Nokia 808. In the rest of the test devices, it is about the same, except for the Samsung Galaxy Note II: the picture is too clear throughout the frame - this is no wonder at F2.6!

If we talk about auto-contrast, then the first place is occupied by Meizu MX2, the second by the iPhone 5, the third by Nokia 808, the rest of the smartphones with auto-contrast did about the same.

Lantern and parking

It's a strange name for a section, but we couldn't fit these frames into any other section. The photo of the lantern was taken during the day in the shade, and in the parking lot it was a little brighter than in the next paragraph "Insufficient lighting". In the parking lot, it is best to look at the nature of the noise.

The sun shines from the left

The best shot was taken on the Samsung Galaxy S4: the minimum number of artifacts, high detail, no “soap” at the edges of the frame (although it has one of the narrowest corners), the most natural white balance. Close to the SGS4 shots were shots taken on the Nokia 808, with one caveat: the white balance was a little fiddly - the photos acquired a slightly coldish tint.
