Mixture about the unexpected

Without lengthy introductions - straight to the point. About Apple's new products and one very good thing that fell into my raking hands.

Apple New

Quite unexpectedly, a large-scale announcement took place - Apple does not let up, despite the traditional summer calm. Time for new monitors, computers and iPads - and time for two rather strange things. One of them is cute, the other is incomprehensible.

I'll start with the cute one. From the Magic Trackpad. Based on the press release, it is primarily addressed to iMac and Mac Pro owners who are accustomed to the company's laptop touchpads. The accessory is made of glass and metal, looks simple and concise, but you can do exactly the same with it as with a laptop touchpad. If you do not have such experience, you need to give an explanation. There is support for multitouch, respectively, for some actions you need not one, but two or four fingers. Key features include:

  • Inertial scrolling
  • Scaling
  • Image rotation
  • Swipe open windows to go to the desktop and vice versa
  • Invoking the list of open windows
  • Object locking and dragging

And other functions. The accessory can be configured as a one-button or two-button mouse, as far as I understand, here the design is similar to laptop touchpads - that is, the entire surface is one large button.

Now two words about the obscure thing - this is a battery charger. It is designed to charge two batteries, apparently, its appearance is justified by the expansion of the line of accessories - the wireless keyboard, mouse, and now the Magic Trackpad also work from such batteries.

Among the monitors, there is also a replenishment, this is the LED Cinema Display - 27 inches. Maximum resolution 2560x1440, built-in iSight video camera, microphone, speakers, three USB 2.0 ports, aluminum housing, glass screen protector, ambient light sensor. Mini DisplayPort is used to transmit video and audio signals, there is a MagSafe power adapter, it can be used to recharge the company's laptops.

Using IPS technology, an interesting figure is given in the press release - viewing angles are 178 degrees. Bearing in mind my experience with the iMac 27, I am inclined to believe that the display on the computer was incredibly pleasing. From picture quality and colors to brightness and viewing angles.

Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to say how much such a display will cost in Russian retail. After all, we have, in fact, a lightweight iMac 27 - without a computer in the appendage. For me personally, this is a very interesting offer, since I am increasingly inclined to think about buying an iMac. I bow, but then I have to pull myself up. The laptop is much more convenient and better. For example, if the electricity suddenly turns off, I can work on my MacBook Pro for another five hours (at least). And iMac will remain only a beautiful table decoration. But here the monitor is yes, another matter. Maybe I'll put this item on my wish list. On sale since September 2010.

The update of the iMac line turned out to be quite logical, laptops have recently been updated, now, apparently, there are components for equipping monoblocks. I'll go to the very top, now the aimaks use Intel Core i3, i5, i7 processors, ATI Radeon HD5750 graphics adapters. The body is made of aluminum and glass - everything is the same. I wrote about iMac 27 on the site, I believe that that review can be supplemented after the release of updated monoblocks - I will have to write only about speed, perhaps. Very convenient.

From the interesting - support for SD cards of the SDXC format is declared. Gentlemen ordering an iMac 27 can order a 256 GB SSD drive as a primary or secondary array. Includes Magic Mouse and Wireless Keyboard (Short). Finally, I want to introduce you to the specifications of the most powerful iMac in the updated line:

  • 27" widescreen LED-backlit display (2560x1440 resolution)
  • 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache
  • 4GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz, expandable up to 16GB
  • Separate ATI Radeon HD5750 GPU with 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
  • 1TB hard drive
  • SuperDrive
  • Mini DisplayPort
  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • iSight Video Camera
  • Gigabit Ethernet port
  • Four USB 2.0 ports
  • FireWire 800 port
  • SD card slot
  • Headphone and microphone connectors
  • Keyboard and mouse included
  • Build to order options include 2.93GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 2TB HDD, 256GB SSD, and up to 16GB RAM

It seems to me that the update came out quite well, I’ll immediately say that the prices in the official Russian retail will again be from the “only for the elite” series. But by the New Year holidays, you can expect a drop in prices for old iMacs, so every cloud has a silver lining. New items should appear on sale in the near future. The same goes for the Magic Trackpad.

Last, the updated Mac Pro . In Russia, sales of these monsters are traditionally small, they are mostly bought by professionals, the equipment is clearly not for civilians - both based on the price and based on the capabilities. Of course, these very possibilities are of interest only to those who are used to working in the Mac OS environment and use programs to create something (and not to endlessly browse the Internet). I think it's worth writing a review of this thing, for now I'll limit myself to the information from the press release and a short list of interesting things:

  • The new computer is equipped with Intel Xeon processors (4-core and 6-core) running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. “The design of these multi-core processors is a single monolith, which allows each core to give up to 12 MB of L3 cache, speeding up data processing and increasing efficiency. These systems feature an integrated memory controller that provides increased memory bandwidth and reduced latency.Turbo Boost dynamically increases the speed of one or both cores, accelerating the processor up to 3.6 GHz, while Hyper-Threading technology allows you to create up to 24 virtual cores"
  • The video card used is ATI Radeon HD5770 with 1 GB of memory, you can order a faster one - ATI Radeon HD5870
  • Optional 512GB SSD available
  • Two Mini DisplayPort ports, it is possible to connect two monitors without the use of an additional video card or adapter: "and the dual-link DVI port supports previous generation displays connected via DVI with a resolution of up to 2560x1600 pixels"
  • Magic Mouse and Keyboard included
  • Five USB 2.0 ports
  • Four PCI Express 2.0 slots
  • Four FireWire 800 ports
  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR
  • Very wide build-to-order configuration options, from processors to memory, installation of two SuperDrives and so on

This computer will be on sale in August, the price in Russia is still unknown.

As you can see, there is nothing superfluous - the update fits perfectly into the overall outline. At the beginning of autumn there will be a traditional announcement of new players, then, probably, something will happen with laptops, but who knows.

My Pretty

It's about the Scosche keychain, I remember that in the last ten things I wrote about this accessory. Now I managed to get it with the help of colleagues from the icover.ru store, for which I thank them very much. The useful one cost eight hundred rubles, and I’ll tell you now why I don’t feel sorry for the money. I don't know about you, but I'm constantly having trouble with Apple branded USB cables. That cat will bite. Then suddenly you pull inadvertently, and the braid will break at the attachment point. Or this cable is in the bag and everything seems to be fine, and then you find the plug separately. Of course, the bag is always interesting, a lot of different things - but I'm already tired of it. Moreover, it is very necessary to have some kind of thing for charging. Usually I charge the device at night, in the morning there are joyful "100%" on the indicator, already at five o'clock they turn into red "20%". We are talking about the iPhone 3Gs, of course. What I do when it's really bad is turn off Wi-Fi, practically remove the backlight of the display, switch mail to manual update. Simple tricks can significantly extend the life of the device.

But in the end, somewhere, somehow, you still need to stumble at least for half an hour and recharge the device. For example, go to the office. Pleasant with useful.

So this is what the Scosche keychain is. First, it's small. Less lighters. Virtually weightless. Fits into the smallest jeans pocket. Not afraid of washing, I guess. Secondly, there is a connector on one side, and a half USB on the other. They are interconnected by a flat cable. To add everything as it was, you need to follow the sequence - as far as I understand. First, you need to insert the connector into the groove, then the USB.

Ingenious thing with one drawback: the USB plug enters with effort and is slightly trimmed from use. However, this is not serious.

It is unlikely that the Scosche keychain can be recommended to owners of desktop computers, the cable length is short. This accessory was born for laptops and for those iPhone owners who have already eaten their fill of branded cables. I highly recommend the item to buy. I forgot to mention one more plus: there is a groove on the case for attaching an accessory - in the key holder or in some other place.

And last but not least, the updated Mac Pro .

And the latest, an updated Mac Pro . I think it's worth writing a review of this thing, but for now I'll limit myself to the information from the press release and a short list of interesting things:
  • The new computer is equipped with Intel Xeon processors (4-core and 6-core) running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. “The design of these multi-core processors is a single monolith, which allows each core to give up to 12 MB of L3 cache, speeding up data processing and increasing efficiency. These systems feature an integrated memory controller that provides increased memory bandwidth and reduced latency. Turbo Boost dynamically increases the speed of one or both cores, accelerating the processor up to 3.6 GHz, while Hyper-Threading technology allows you to create up to 24 virtual cores"

Moreover, it is very necessary to have some kind of little thing for charging. I usually charge the device at night, in the morning there are joyful "100%" on the indicator, already at five o'clock they turn into red "20%".
