A mix about a couple of laptops

Today I will be very brief and concise, the main goal is to show one laptop and introduce another. Something like a first look at two devices from different worlds. If we talk about portable computers in general, then before the end of the year we still have a lot of interesting things to see, this is the traditional Apple announcement in November, and netbooks based on ION (a review of one of them next week), and Sony VAIO X, and so on. . In general, it will be fun. In the meantime, let's turn to what is already there or will be very, very soon.

Matte Buddy

Apple makes some pretty expensive laptops, though to say so is to misunderstand the price of apple laptops. After all, in addition to the expensive representatives of the MacBook Pro, Air, there is also a regular, plastic MacBook, and it is not so expensive. True, this is if you do not compare it with classmates, even omitting the moment that here you can comfortably use two “axes” at once, while this possibility is not provided for Windows-based laptops. In any case, at the moment only Apple and Sony are closely involved in expensive devices, and they are doing it with great success. However, if the regular MacBook Pro seems expensive to some, then what can we say about the special versions of these laptops. You ask: what are these special ones? And I'll be happy to tell you about one of them. This is a MacBook Pro 17 laptop with a matte display and the highest possible configuration.

I talked about the original MBP 17 in the Inchi in Iron Armor article, a lot of water has flown under the bridge since then.

Thanks to your obedient servant, this laptop was bought by several people who need not only a relatively light device with a seventeen-inch display, but also that this "dreadnought" should also work for a long time. One of them goes to some inspections related either to oil or gas, he is very happy about the new thing, that’s a man who doesn’t care about all this black noise about “not like everyone else, think differently”. The guy needed just such a solution, so that a large display would work for a long time, while having a normal weight. And he got it. What he does not regret at all. True, I had to help in transplanting from Windows, but in general this process was painless. In the material, I wrote that the operating time for such a laptop does not play a role, as it turned out, I was completely wrong, users write that they bought this device in many respects precisely because of the commendable operating time.

Well, and many point to the shortcomings of the current MBP, one of the most discussed is the glossy display. I don’t quite understand this shortcoming, since I work in a not very bright place, glare doesn’t scare me, but I somehow don’t really want to sit on a bench with MBP. Probably, everyone has their own needs and tasks, probably, a matte display is a hundred times better for processing photos. Although this is also a controversial issue. Apple did not think for a long time, but simply gave users the opportunity to customize themselves, however, in our country it does not work. Here is a link where you can "make" an MBP 17 similar to the one I had in my hands. 3.06 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB flash drive Finally, a matte display. The order amount is 4499 dollars, the amount is not bad. It is interesting that the resulting sample will even outwardly differ from the usual one, the display bezel is not black, but silver. An unusual detail of an unusual MBP 17. The worst thing is that in our country the maximum "regular" configuration of this laptop costs about 120 thousand rubles, how much they can ask for a special one - I'm even afraid to imagine. I guess it could be 140 thousand, well, or even more. It is more profitable to order in the AppStore or otherwise buy for a more reasonable price in the USA (or another country).

But let's leave the question of price, whoever needs it will buy it. And who needs? I do not even know. Probably for photographers, because for a seventeen-inch laptop with such a configuration, the model does not weigh very much - about three kilograms, and the dimensions are as “shrunk” as possible. Take it with you to travel? Well, why not, given how long the MBP 17 can live without an outlet. The most important thing in another - how to work behind a matte display. It works, in principle, exactly the same in my case. True, this is true for the first minutes, then you begin to see the difference. Photos, icons, documents look different. Especially photos, videos, with the help of Aperture I processed a dozen photos - in principle, there seems to be no much difference compared to the usual MBP 17. Or is there? I put the laptops next to each other, turned it on, looked - the matte display seems to be more contrasting, the viewing angles are better, there is more black (although everything is fine with black on the usual one). In addition, somehow the matte display is more comfortable, I don’t know how to say it.

In general, after playing with the “monster”, I didn’t get enough of it to forget all my business and run away with a credit card on the Apple website. But, I think, such people may well be found, and such an MBP 17 should not be considered as some kind of gadget, but as a utilitarian thing for a professional, be it a photographer, designer, layout designer or anyone else.

Toshiba Qosmio X500 - not space

Let's go over the tops for now, because, on the one hand, this is a gaming laptop based on the already known Toshiba Satellite P500.

The same case, the same connectors and so on. If we talk about appearance, then the color has changed - black with red, rather laconically, the X500 does not look so rustic, everything spoils the abundance of varnish, the case is soiled to the point of impossibility. You just want to wipe it.

Accordingly, if outwardly everything is very similar, then inside there are a lot of differences, this also applies to the display. In the P500 sample I used, it was not the best, it lacked black, in other words, it was disgusting. Here, the maximum resolution is 1920x1080, and everything is in order with the color. Speaking about the filling, I can't help mentioning that the premiere of the X500 in Russia took place at an Intel event, they showed new processors, and, accordingly, one of the laptops based on them. So, inside the X500 beats Intel Core i7 720QM with a frequency of 1.6 / 2.8 Turbo GHz. As I understand it, this is the youngest representative of the new family, you can read about i7 here. Interestingly, there is other information about this “stone” on the net:

Intel Core i7-720QM Processor:

  • Technological process: 45 nm
  • Number of physical cores: 4
  • Core clock: 1.60 GHz (up to 3.28 GHz with Turbo Boost)
  • L3 cache size: 6 MB
  • TDP level: 45W

It's not clear who to believe, you need to call Intel and beg on your knees for help on this issue.

It is also interesting that the X500 immediately comes with the "seven" on board, it works quite quickly, however, it did not perform any particularly difficult tasks. In general, here is a topic for a separate discussion - innovation is innovation, but is it necessary for a gaming laptop? How will the applications work there?

Video card - NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M with 1 GB GDDR5 memory and PhysX technology. To be honest, I didn’t have time to try it on any game, so I’ll feed you breakfast - soon the X500 will fall into my hands for a long time, and then we’ll play all sorts of CoD4: Modern Warfare 2 and so on on it , even though I have already abandoned games on the PC for a long time.

There is no official information on the price yet, the product page has already appeared on the American website of the company, they promise only availability in October. I can only assume that, as in the case of the P500, the price will be taken - the cost of various modifications can vary from 1300 to 2000 thousand dollars. But these are just guesses, more expensive modifications may well roll out. Let's see.

I almost forgot to say that the sound here, as in the case of the P500, is all right, a sort of bookbox, even now on the shoulder and walking around the village.
