It's hard to be a god. Java Games Release 12

Mobile games are appearing on mobile phones more and more often. And it is very gratifying that they are based on good literary works, which we all read with pleasure. And for those who are "not in the know", such a game can be a good incentive to get acquainted with the original work. Today we will introduce you to the game, which is based on the plot "It's hard to be a god" by the Strugatsky brothers. Just a couple of days ago you could read the announcement of this game in our news, and now you can get acquainted with the game in more detail.

The game was announced by Akella-mobile. Iriy Soft took part in its development.

Gameplay

The game is a classic turn-based strategy game. Before each battle, you will have the opportunity to change equipment. New goods can be purchased in the store, and they immediately fall into the convoy. Unnecessary things from the convoy can be sold, and the rest can be supplied to one of the characters. Many things increase the basic characteristics of the heroes, and this should also be taken into account when equipping.

In addition to the main characters (they are highlighted in yellow), other team members can take direct part in the battle. If there is no need for everyone to participate, then some of the heroes can be excluded from the fight. When you click on the name, such a hero becomes inactive (the color of his name changes to gray). Since experience points are given for participation in battles, the number of participants in the battle can be reduced to reasonable limits to quickly upgrade the main characters. In addition, as you progress through the team will receive new forces with unique characteristics. You will be joined by a doctor girl, an alchemist, a crossbowman, a spy... But it does not make sense to reveal all the secrets of the game here - then it will not be interesting to play. In some battles, you will be offered special conditions - to capture buildings or destroy a specific enemy. The battle will end immediately after completing all the tasks. If the enemy manages to capture the key building before you, or the hero who must stay alive dies, then the mission will have to be replayed.

After completing the equipment, the battle begins directly. It consists of several stages. First comes the movement phase. Each character has a certain amount of action points, which is displayed as blue cells available for movement. Orange cells on the edges indicate possible positions for attack. After moving, you can attack the enemy or choose another type of action (waiting, using items, changing weapons). When choosing an attack, you can change the type of weapon (if the hero has several of them). Then the actual fight begins. An animated picture is displayed on the screen, in which both opponents exchange blows. In this case, the amount of damage and the increase in level are immediately calculated. The opponent responds to the blow only if the types of weapons match. If you attack the archer with a slashing weapon, he will not answer you. Accordingly, during the attack of the enemy, the response of the character can only be symmetrical. This allows you to change the battle strategy by choosing enemies with different types of weapons to attack. At this stage, I immediately want to express my wishes to the game developers. The fact is that even after all your heroes have made their moves, the move does not automatically go to the enemy. It must be specially called from the menu or using the right soft key. It would also be convenient to have a function to turn off the animated picture of the battle. It lasts long enough, and the phone screen has time to go out. On the device used to test the game (Nokia N91), the situation was saved only by installing a software flashlight.

The second not very pleasant moment is the lack of free movement on the map of the game world. All missions are hard-coded into the story, and the whole game consists of constant battles, which are interspersed with short animated briefings, during which they explain the situation to you and give you a new task. That is, there is no question of any non-linearity of the plot. Only the mass of options for the battle itself diversifies the game a little.

Role elements

Each hero increases the proficiency of the items they use in combat. Increasing the level allows you to use previously unavailable ammunition and more successfully apply attacks.

A few words about saves. You can save the game during the movement phase on the battlefield. But there is only one save slot, and the game is automatically saved after the current mission is completed. Therefore, if one of the non-key characters died during the battle, then in the future you will have to play without him. Or restart the whole game. It would be more logical to allow the player to independently load options for saved games. But what is not, is not.

Management

All game control is on the joystick. As special keys, only the "0" button can be used to call up the map and "#" for information about buildings. The game menu is called by the left functional key. It is convenient to control characters, all given orders can be canceled using the right function key.

Graphics

Three-dimensional elements were not used in the development of the game, so the graphics, although beautiful, are rather monotonous. At the same time, the figures of the characters are drawn very carefully. You will always be able to distinguish the members of your team by their appearance. The key figures of the opponents also have individual traits. All other "non-scripts" differ only in type. As opponents, you will meet stormtroopers, monks, robbers, etc. The schedule of the battle phase deserves special attention. Despite the scripted pictures, it looks very good. Opponents brandish swords, shoot from crossbows, the healer uses potions... Watching this several times is really interesting. As noted above, you cannot turn off the animated picture, so after a while it starts to tire.

Audio

The introductory cut-scenes play quite cheerful music, which is replaced by the sounds of combat during the battle. The sounds are quite natural - you can hear the sound of swords and ax blows. Any change in character status is also accompanied by its own sound. So for a full immersion in the plot, it is better to leave the sound. But I want to note that it is quite loud and others may not like it.

Impressions

It should be honestly said that only names of heroes and geographic locations make this game related to the work of the Strugatsky brothers . From the point of view of the turn-based strategy genre, the game could equally well be called anything. But the proposed plot allows you to once again plunge into the already forgotten world of Arakan and, together with the heroes of the game, try to change its fate. The highlight of the game is given by familiar names that pop up in memory as you progress. I even wanted to reread the book.

It's fun to play, especially if you have a soft spot for turn-based combat-based strategies. I gladly devoted several evenings to this game, which ended up taking six hours of pure playing time. We were given a pre-release version for testing, so everyone interested in purchasing it has to wait for the official release, which is scheduled for November. During this time, the developers will have time to polish it and eliminate the occurring glitches. Although I must admit that there are no special problems with the launch and operation of the game even today. So we are waiting for the official release.

The full version of the game was provided by Akella-mobile, to which we are grateful for the efficiency. The game was tested on a Nokia N91 smartphone provided by Nokia.
