#Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone

Xiaomi is hosting the Mi Pop Run for the second year. This is a worldwide charity run.

From September 9 to September 27, participants in online activity will be counted, and on September 28, the culmination of the project will take place in Khodynka Park - an offline run with the participation of Mi fans, the Xiaomi team and celebrities who have expressed interest in supporting the project. By tradition, the counted number of participants will be converted into a sum of money, which Xiaomi will transfer to the Lifeline account.

Motivation sounds like this: The Mi Pop Run campaign is designed to help children suffering from bone sarcoma, a disease that, it would seem, puts an end to any hint of the ability to walk. However, thanks to modern medicine and the indifference of our fans and friends, children have a chance for a miracle. Last year, a Xiaomi charity event raised money for the operation of 13-year-old Timur Nepalov from Saratov, which ended successfully. This year we are planning, with the assistance of friends and partners, to give a chance for recovery to other Russian children in need of help.

New function in Excel

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Excel to replace VLOOKUP (VLOOKUP). And this, perhaps, is the main event of this September for me, eclipsing even the IFA.

Not everyone knows, but VLOOKUP is one of the oldest Excel functions. It has been from the very beginning and, according to Microsoft statistics, has always been in the TOP 3 most popular after "Sum" and "Average". For many, and for me, VLOOKUP was the first "complex" function to be mastered, showing that there was a lot of power hidden in Excel. I remember how, at my very first job, I spent three hours putting together a table of sales, sellers, and assortment. He was terribly proud of himself. And then a colleague who knows a little about Excel came and showed me how all my work could be done in 15 minutes.

I stopped using VLOOKUP fairly quickly, starting to use the more flexible "INDEX… MATCH" combination. However, it was the surprise from VLOOKUP that became the impetus for learning Excel and believing in its omnipotence, which only strengthened after the release of PowerPivot, which removed the limits on the number of rows.

The new function will be called XLOOKUP because it combines both VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP. I guess few people have heard about HLOOKUP, but if VLOOKUP is a vertical view, then HLOOKUP is horizontal. Often, the need to use HLOOKUP indicates that the logic is broken in the layout of the data.

The new XLOOKUP function will help remove many of the limitations that led me to switch to INDEX…MATCH:

  • Able to search to the left of the first column, not just to the right
  • Can search from the end
  • Can find the next largest element. Previously, VLOOKUP could only search for the next smallest
  • Supports insertion of additional columns. When describing the parameters in the VLOOKUP, you need to specify the number of the column in which to search, and if you insert or delete a column, the number will shift accordingly. Now it's not a problem
  • The function requires less data to run, so it will run faster

XLOOKUP example:

The new feature is so good, it might even replace INDEX-MATCH. So far, XLOOKUP is available in beta version of Office. If you love Excel, then here you can read the analysis of the function and find examples of use.

IFA Impressions

This is my first visit to IFA. And IFA liked more than MWC. Thought it was probably due to the compact size of the event. It is easy to walk around all the pavilions in 5 hours. But, unfortunately, I had only 3 hours, so a lot was left behind the scenes.

Another bonus of compact size is that you constantly meet acquaintances, and it’s more fun to walk that way. And in general, the atmosphere at IFA is more informal. Partially at New high quality AMW-810 Bluetooth Earphones Wireless Sports Earbuds Stereo This is also influenced by the fact that there are many "tourists" at the exhibition who came just to stare. This MWC ticket costs 750 euros. The entrance to the IFA is only 25 euros, so the curious come to the exhibition, I saw couples walking hand in hand through the pavilions. There are many more school excursions, both for high school students and for very small fry, which runs and enthusiastically squeaks from quadrocopters, robots and electric bicycles.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone

Visually, IFA is certainly not a particularly remarkable place. Barcelona is incomparable. Usually all photos show the main entrance-drum. And it seems that if such an entrance is impressive, then the architecture will be on the level. But in fact, IFA are rectangular boxes of pavilions with narrow passages.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone

You can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes at a quick pace, but minibuses ride between the pavilions.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone

And there are many fast food outlets between the pavilions. It's funny to watch how respectable uncles in suits eat hot dogs and drink lemonade. Well, there is simply nowhere else to go to calmly stand and talk.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone

The IFA is full of advertisements for future exhibitions. Moreover, they advertise all sorts of things, from Computex a year later to events in China that start in just a couple of days.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone

There are many Chinese people at the exhibition who are on their own wave. And if they often go to MWC with cameras, notebooks and try to give everyone their business card and arrange a business meeting, then here the Chinese are more like merchants showing goods.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone

And there are many more brands that everyone has begun to forget about. And you can hear such conversations: “Are you a real brand A? - Yes, real, but we have nothing to do with A, we just produce products under this brand. - So it's not real? – No, the real one!”.

Below is an example of a real Agfa brand. Modern AGFA no longer produces cameras, but makes synthetic paper, solar panels, industrial printers.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35 : the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone #Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone

Or, for example, here are Dynabook laptops with the Toshiba logo on the wallpaper. But here, in fairness, this is not Chinese consumer goods. Sharp bought laptops from Toshiba and is now going to produce them under the Dynabook brand. Toshiba has been making computers under this name since 1985, and the brand has a rich history. That's probably why we bought it.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone

The first question I asked when I saw the Portege X30 was “Didn't Lenovo tell you anything?”. With a sad sigh, I immediately realized that my interlocutor had already been “gotten”.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone

The Portege X30 starts at $1,000. The laptop is aimed at business users. The device is interesting. With a diagonal of 13.3 inches, the laptop weighs only 1,040 grams. At the same time, the screen is matte, with an actual brightness of 470 nits. IGZO LCD technology, Full HD resolution. Optionally, there is an option with a touch screen. There is fast charging, in the MobileMark 14 test with a brightness of 200 nits, the laptop lasted 18.5 hours.

Dynabooks say that they write the BIOS themselves, which in theory should indicate increased security. Unfortunately, laptops work on the 8th generation of processors from Intel, integrated graphics Intel® UHD Graphics 620, Windows 10 Pro. The body is made of magnesium.

The most popular theme at the exhibition is household appliances, vacuum cleaners and, of course, TVs of all colors and sizes. Even the "new" Polaroid makes TVs.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone

By the way, when choosing a vacuum cleaner, pay attention that it does not have spinning brushes. This evil. At the stand, the manufacturer, without suspecting it, made anti-advertising for himself. See how the balls of dirt fly all over the floor. One gets the impression that the robot wants to litter more than clean up.

Nokia booth

It came as a surprise to me that manufacturers such as Philips or Vestel, inconspicuous in the domestic market, occupied huge areas at IFA. For example, Philips made a whole layout of an apartment, in each room of which various gadgets of the company were placed.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35: the main event September and the lumberjack's phone #Echo35: the biggest event of September and the woodcutter's phone #Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone #Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone

But Nokia's booth was tiny. And more like startups, not a solid company. On the other hand, the company managed to exhibit all the products, so there are no complaints.

Talking about the Lenovo booth, he praised the stylish Motorola One ZOOM case, but it seems that this is a new trend that those who are tired of glossy glass cases will pick up. Look at the chic design of Nokia 7.2.

In addition to smartphones, there were many interesting "buttons" on the stand. My favorite is the Nokia Flip 2720 clamshell running on KaiOS. This means that there is WhatsApp, Facebook, Google maps and even an app store if I understand correctly. The phone is curious, it will be in Russia in October. In Europe, the price is indicated at 90 euros. You need to try the phone live to understand whether it is justified or too much.

#Echo35: the biggest event of September and the woodcutter's phone #Echo35 : September's biggest event and lumberjack's phone #Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone

There was also a pink Nokia 110:

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone #Echo35 : the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone #Echo35: the most important event of September and the lumberjack's phone

Nokia also introduced the 800 Tough, calling it "the woodcutter's phone". I immediately joked in my head that if the phone came in pink, it would be “a woodcutter's phone who wants to be liked by other woodcutters”. Although, in my opinion, a protected pink phone would look cool. But the 800 Tough comes in camouflage. Probably to make it harder to find if you dropped it in the forest.

According to the characteristics of the Nokia 800 Tough, these are:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 (28nm), Dual-core (2x1.1 GHz Cortex-A7), Adreno 304 graphics
  • Memory 4 GB / 512 MB, microSD slot up to 32 GB
  • 2 MP camera, LED flash/torch
  • 2.4" TFT screen, 256K colors, 240 x 320 dots
  • Connectivity: A-GPS, GLONASS, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB 2.0
  • Other IP68, MIL-STD-810G, radio included, 3.5mm jack included
  • Dimensions: 145.4 x 62.1 x 16.1 mm, weight 161 g
  • Price: €110
  • Release date in Russia: unknown, but after October

Also held Nokia 1 and 1 Plus for the first time. Budget devices sold in Russia at a price of 4,690 rubles and 5,990 rubles. At first glance, not bad devices.

#Echo35: September's Biggest Event and Lumberjack's Phone

Stay tuned for reviews in early October. Roman Belykh booked a Nokia 7.2, and I'll take care of the "button" and Nokia 1.

Conclusion

Assessing my impressions of the IFA, I would like to say that it is rather not an exhibition, but a fair. More than MWC, IFA is sales oriented. Most of the exhibitors sighed in disappointment when they heard that I was a journalist, and even from Russia. If at MWC most of the products are prototypes of the future, then at IFA they are selling with might and main what they produce here and now. You can buy a laptop, noise-canceling headphones, keyboard, mouse, monitor and even plan how the refrigerator will fit into the interior.

  • Event registration time: September 9, 2019 to September 15, 2019 (11:59 PM).
  • Date: September 28, 2019

If you can participate, why not?

Partly on the New high quality AMW-810 Bluetooth Earphones Wireless Sports Earbuds Stereo, this is also affected by the fact that there are many “tourists” at the exhibition who came just to stare.

You can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes at a quick pace, but minibuses ride between the pavilions.

And there are many fast food outlets between the pavilions. It's funny to watch how respectable uncles in suits eat hot dogs and drink lemonade. Well, there is simply nowhere else to go to calmly stand and talk.

The IFA is full of advertisements for future exhibitions. Moreover, they advertise all sorts of things, from Computex a year later to events in China that start in just a couple of days.

There are many Chinese people at the exhibition who are on their own wave. And if they often go to MWC with cameras, notebooks and try to give everyone their business card and arrange a business meeting, then here the Chinese are more like merchants showing goods.
