iSoft №85. Heroes of Might and Magic III HD

Surprisingly, on the day of the release of this game, everyone who could only hastened to write about it with screenshots, and did not even hesitate to call such posts reviews. It took me a few days to evaluate this remake, but even now I do not pretend to be a full-fledged comprehensive review. In this article I will note all the interesting features, bugs, convenience and inconvenience of the new version and, of course, share my thoughts and impressions.

Price and availability

We usually write about the price at the end, but what's the point of making an intrigue out of what is already known. In the App Store, the game is sold for 600 rubles, on Google Play the price tag is the same, but the Steam version will cost you as much as 900 rubles. I assumed that Ubisoft would make the purchase cross-platform, and you would just need to log in with your Ubi account to play. But like everyone else, I can be wrong too. I will share my thoughts on the adequacy of the price in detail in conclusion, now I will only briefly note that in my opinion, for Android and iOS, this cost is very good (taking into account the dollar exchange rate, it turns out just $ 10).

What was changed and what was left intact

In the HD edition, all the models of heroes, creatures, spells and everything-everything-everything have been completely redrawn. For the end user, this "results" in the fact that on the small screen of the iPad Mini the picture looks very smooth, especially noticeable in the fonts. By the way, the redrawing of heroes is sometimes noticeable to the naked eye, for example, Kira's look has become more ... crazy or something.

Let me remind you that most of all the fans of the series were afraid that Ubisoft would start using some kind of bad scheme with donations, freemium, mandatory internet connection, etc. Luckily, none of this exists. Before us are the good old third "Heroes". They work great without an internet connection, you don't need to enter any passwords, etc. And even if you closed the iPad, then when you open it again, the game will not go anywhere. Surprisingly, Ubisoft left the masterpiece almost untouched, only carefully restored.

Oh yes, and of course there are achievements in Game Center!

They forgot to add the most hardcore achievement to HoMM3. "See how the Magic Mirror works - 0.0%".

Management

It was immediately clear that the controls for touch screens would have to be modified one way or another, the more interesting how well Ubisoft did it.

You need to use two finger gestures to navigate the map. In principle, this is logical and convenient, the only thing is that sometimes the system does not recognize pressing and may think that you want to move the hero.

To move a hero, you need to first press to select a destination and then confirm it with a second press. If you just want to see information about the building, then use the long press.

Double-tap on the target is the signal for shooters to attack in combat mode. If you need to see information about a creature, you can also use a double tap, but there should be a short pause between the first and second taps. The attack of the shooters is not very convenient: if you press twice not fast enough, then instead of attacking you will be shown information about the units. By the way, the first time you press it, you can see whether the damage will be done completely or only partially.

For melee creatures, the scheme is slightly more complicated. First you long press to highlight the units you want to attack. After that, you need to choose the position from which you plan to strike. A little dreary at first glance, but you get used to it quickly.

With spells, everything is quite simple. You open the book of witchcraft, select the desired one, and then select the target.

It is important to understand that the convenience of playing on a tablet is slightly inferior to a full-fledged computer, the same hotkeys are not available here. On the other hand, all the necessary buttons are at hand and their size is optimal for precise pressing.

To be honest, I personally did not have any special bugs (except for the periodic failure of double-clicking during a remote attack). I tested the game on the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 2. Therefore, I specifically went into the reviews and read what people wrote. Owners of the iPad 2/3 and the first generation iPad Mini are complaining about intermittent game crashes and freezes. Apparently, Ubisoft diligently “licked” it only for new generations of tablets. But I hope that crashes in older iPads will be fixed in updates. By the way, complaints about the inability to attack with melee units are precisely related to the fact that people did not read the instructions, but did not figure it out themselves.

No, perhaps I did remember one bug: instead of the word "Autosave", I see an abracadabra of symbols.

Online play

One of the biggest disappointments for most players looking for a full online game. In fact, you can play Musical Theater in Kigali only in Hot Seat mode is clearly not the most convenient way (although you can remember your youth).

General impressions

It's no exaggeration to say that we are seeing a dream come true for many old HoMM 3 players. You have no idea how many people wanted to play good old Heroes on their brand new iPad or Android tablet. And so Ubisoft gave us such a gift.

Let's talk about price first. In November, my colleagues and I discussed at the NVIDIA presentation the possibility of the release of the third "Heroes" on tablets and talked about the possible price. Then almost everyone agreed that 650 rubles would be a sufficient amount for such a remake. The main thing is that without donations and other nonsense.

I think that for 600 rubles, many would be ready to buy just a working port of the heroes, but we got a completely redrawn game optimized for touch screens.

I read here on the Internet a review from the category: "The bugs in the balance of the third" Heroes "have long been known, they could fix them, finalize the game!" I think that Ubisoft did absolutely the right thing by not touching the game, because no one knows how well they would have managed to correct the balance.

In general, I think that the restored version of the third "Heroes" is definitely worth the money.
