Comparison of Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro cameras

The Chinese company Huawei recently introduced a new smartphone Mate 30 Pro, which endowed with the most advanced cameras and the latest developments in the field of computational photography.

It became interesting for me to compare the top camera phone with the current flagship devices of this and previous generations: is the Mate 30 Pro so good compared to the Mate 20 Pro and even the P30 Pro.

Below is a table comparing sensors, lenses and a description of the presence or absence of optical stabilization:

Model Rear cameras Front cameras
Mate 20 Pro (1) 8 MP (3X optical zoom, OIS, 80mm, f/2.4)
(2) 40 MP (27mm, f/1.8, 1/1 sensor size, 7")
(3) 20 MP (16mm, f/2.2)
Laser Focus
24 MP (26mm, f/2.0)
P30 Pro (1) 8 MP (colour, 5x optical zoom, OIS, 125mm, f/3.4)
(2) 40 MP (colour, OIS , 27mm, f/1.6, sensor size 1/1.7")
(3) 20 MP (colour, 16mm, f/2.2)
Laser focus
Mate 30 Pro (1) 8 MP (3X optical zoom, OIS, 80mm, f/2.4)
(2) 40 MP (OIS, 27mm, f/1.6, sensor size 1/1.54" SuperSensing Camera)
(3) 40 MP (18mm, f/1.8, sensor size 1/1.7" Cine Camera)
(4) 3D Depth
No laser focusing
32 MP (26mm, f/2.0)

As usual, I will provide photos in various shooting conditions, and then comment. Everything described below is based on personal long-term experience with smartphones. So my opinion may not be the same as yours. With this phrase, I wanted to emphasize that some frames will be commented not from the point of view of a simple visual comparison, but from the point of view of the operating experience of these devices.

All pictures were taken in automatic mode without exposure, white balance, or other adjustments. I also didn’t use a tripod, because in front of you are not professional cameras, but mobile devices that need to be used exactly as mobile ones: I took out my phone, selected a composition and pressed the shutter button.

Day. Clear, sunny weather. Main Module

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro camera comparison and Mate 30 Pro

  • Mate 30 Pro gets 5 points due to better detail (note the rendering of the bricks) and lack of artifacts (on the roof).
  • Mate 20 Pro gets 4 points, as the photo looks slightly worse than Mate 30 Pro, but better than P30 Pro.
  • P30 Pro gets 3 points. Here claims to the friability of the picture and a slightly higher contrast. Because of what details disappear in the shadows.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro camera comparison and Mate 30 Pro Comparison of Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro cameras

  • P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro get 5 points each. They have a larger viewing angle, less soap at the edges of the frames, although the color reproduction is different, it is still closer to the truth.
  • Mate 30 Pro gets 4 points. Here the software embellished the photo. Yes, she began to look beautiful, but not quite natural. Here, everyone chooses his own. In addition, the viewing angle is smaller: 18mm versus 16mm. The detailing is about the same, with a slight advantage towards the Mate 30 Pro.

Day. Clear, sunny weather. Zoom Module

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro camera comparison and Mate 30 Pro Comparison of Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro cameras

  • It is difficult to give the first place to one of the devices. But in the frame on the Mate 30 Pro, there is a little more detail, a little wider dynamic range. 5 points here.
  • 4 points go for the P30 Pro. The picture is almost the same Mate 30 Pro, but the details are a slight miss.
  • 3 points for the Mate 20 Pro. Here, the absence of some details is more noticeable.

  • 4 points - Mate 20 Pro. In general, not bad, but dull, and there are less details.
  • 3 points - P30 Pro. Here is the moment when the software thought that there was not enough light, so it switched the camera from 5X to 1X and cropped.

Day. Light from the window. Indoors, but the lighting level is even weaker. Main Module

  • 2 points - Mate 30 Pro. I agree, most likely, incorrect focusing. But all devices were in an equal position. Fully automatic settings.

Evening. Home lighting. Main Module

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P30 Pro camera comparison and Mate 30 Pro

From this moment the story begins, because only in the evening and night photographs the potential of all modern cameras is revealed. In this case, the lighting is typically domestic: 5 LED lamps of 60 W each in a room of 15 m2.

  • 5 points go to the Mate 30 Pro. The picture is clean, without artifacts.
  • 4 points - Mate 20 Pro. Surprisingly, he did well. A little less detail and more noise. The color, by the way, is accurate here, lukewarm. But the Mate 30 Pro decided to set the white balance to the white point.
  • 3 points - P30 Pro. Here the device did not hit the color, artifacts and medium detail.

Evening. Home lighting, but the level is much lower. Main Module

  • 4 points - P30 Pro. Not much worse than the Mate 30 Pro. But the colors were distorted - everything is yellow, a little less detail.
  • 2 points - Mate 20 Pro. The old man did his best.

  • 4 points - P30 Pro. Focus "floated", which is no wonder.
  • 2 points - Mate 20 Pro. Almost nothing is visible. This is how I saw the calendar with my eyes.

Impressions

I prepared a review of the Mate 30 Pro the other day. You can treat him as you like, but he made an extremely positive impression on me.

I've been using the P30 Pro for several months - it's one of the best devices in terms of cameras, looks and speed. Especially since it will be updated to Google Android 10 and EMUI 10.

The Mate 20 Pro is a great affordable camera phone with long battery life, loud stereo speakers and an ergonomic design. I used this device for almost a year.

Who won in this comparison? I am writing these lines before summing up. It seems to me that the Mate 30 Pro will be a favorite, but the P30 Pro, thanks to the zoom modules, can be considered the coolest smartphone with a camera that can even take pictures of the moon without a tripod. The Mate 20 Pro gadget will be left behind. However, of the three devices, it is the most inexpensive.

  • First place - 101 points - Huawei Mate 30 Pro
  • Second place - 92 points - Huawei P30 Pro
  • Third place - 75 points - Huawei Mate 20 Pro

In addition, the viewing angle is smaller: 18mm versus 16mm. The detailing is about the same, with a slight advantage towards the Mate 30 Pro.

Model Main cameras Mate 20 Pro front cameras (1) 8 MP (3X optical zoom, OIS, 80mm, f/2.4) (2) 40 MP (27mm, f/1.8, 1/1.7 sensor size) inch) (3) 20 MP (16mm, f/2.2) Laser Focus 24 MP (26mm, f/2.0) P30 Pro (1) 8 MP (color, 5x optical zoom, OIS, 125mm, f/3.4) (2) 40 MP (colour, OIS, 27mm, f/1.6, sensor size 1/1.7") (3) 20 MP (colour, 16mm, f/2.2) Mate 30 Pro laser focus (1) 8 MP (3X optical zoom, OIS, 80mm, f/2.4) (2) 40 MP (OIS, 27mm, f/1.6, sensor size 1/1.54" SuperSensing Camera) (3) 40 MP (18mm, f/ 1.8, sensor size 1/1.7" Cine Camera) (4) 3D Depth No laser focusing 32 MP (26 mm, f/2.0)
