Until now, manufacturers of Windows Mobile devices have not spoiled us with products in the budget category. I do not undertake to explain this phenomenon with accuracy, but I will make one assumption. Communicators, as a rule, have a cost of 15 thousand rubles. In 2005 and 2006, these were the minimum prices. Devices cost much more than this money. The image of a communicator, formed over several years, is quite typical and overgrown with many clichés. A person who has not worked with such a device almost always characterizes it as something very complex, business people or so-called business users are also added here. Obviously, if not the most tangible, then quite a large contribution to the formation of opinion is played by the final cost of the product. An expensive device can be either a very functional device, or an extremely “fashion” one, when the principle “the more expensive, the better” applies.

This stereotype is beneficial for companies - communicators can remain quite expensive, while their functionality is unlikely to change much over time. But the market does not stand still, and in addition to the companies that make up the backbone, and for Windows Mobile these were HTC customers in 2005 and 2006, new manufacturers are entering the game. Small companies, whose traditional card is the low cost of products, have penetrated the expanses of Windows Mobile. This applies in particular to Voxtel.

HTC sooner or later had to present a budget solution and they did. Voxtel has already practiced the skills of creating a budget communicator on the Voxtel W420 model. W520 can be considered a logical continuation of this device. For i-Mate, the release of a budget model may be a temporary solution to the problem of lack of products and their poor quality.

In a comparative review, we will test the Voxtel and i-Mate models (the HTC P3400 review is already on the site), and also compare all three devices, traditionally highlighting all the minuses and pluses. In some of the discussed features, we will mark the advantages of the device with a + sign, if all devices are equal in the selected parameter, then the parameter does not participate in the final assessment.

Let's start with the package.

There are no significant differences here. The kit is almost the same, except for the case in HTC P3400.

Design

With a high degree of confidence, we can say that all three communicators have a strict, almost classic design. This is facilitated by the use of dark gray, the absence of bright elements. i-Mate JAMA stands out a little due to silver inserts on the back of the case, as well as side keys and a speaker grille. But this is not a very bright feature. In HTC P3400, the back of the case is made in black, which makes the communicator stand out a little.

The appearance of each communicator is unique, the simplest among them is the Voxtel W520. It is definitely impossible to identify a leader in design, different people have their own preferences, so there is parity here.

Body materials

Let's turn to the body materials. The plastic used is almost the same for Voxtel W520 and i-Mate JAMA. This is a material typical for the budget segment, it does not stand out in any way. Its advantages include low soiling. But, on the other hand, both devices are made with sputtering elements, over time the case may lose its presentable appearance. The coating will rub off in some places. In this respect HTC P3400 is preferable. Here, only the front panel is made of simple plastic, that is, plastic occupies a small part of the area. The entire back side and ribs are made of plastic with a coating resembling rubber (soft-touch). The device is more comfortable to hold in the hand, it does not slip. At the same time, there are no scratches or any scuffs on such a coating.

In terms of the quality of materials, we put a "+" for the HTC P3400 communicator. It uses more interesting and convenient plastic (soft-touch), besides, such a coating is not subject to rapid wear, which can be said about coated plastic from competitors.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, Voxtel and i-Mate are almost identical. Both devices noticeably outperform HTC. The latter is wider and thicker than competitors. Let's turn to the exact data for comparison:

The most compact is i-Mate JAMA. It wins both in size and weight. The device from Voxtel is the most extended in length, but in terms of other dimensions it is in second place. HTC P3400 is the largest of the contestants. Curiously, HTC and Voxtel are equal in terms of the convenience of the location in the hand. The features of the P3400 case are evident. Thanks to the rounded edges and ends, it is convenient to hold the device, even despite the dimensions. JAMA outperforms both in this parameter. The communicator is narrow and light, most conveniently located in the hand.

All three models can be easily placed both in trouser pockets and in a jacket or shirt. But in the latter case, JAMA looks a little better. Point earns i-Mate JAMA.

Element Arrangement

On the front side, everything is standard. Each communicator has a display, a navigation unit and a speaker. At the top of all models there is an indicator of the operation of the device and wireless interfaces, as well as missed calls, received messages and the process of charging devices. Voxtel W520 excelled here. In this model, the indicator is originally combined with an additional button. To the right of the loudspeaker above the display, we see a browser call button in the device, it can be reassigned to another action or application. The indicator is located inside this key and lights up red or green for various events.

Volume keys on Voxtel and i-Mate are on the right edge. In the case of HTC - on the left. The implementation of this button is the most unfortunate in HTC P3400. The rocker key is too short. Another problem with this button is the separation of clicks. That is, it is rather difficult to understand whether the volume increases or decreases when pressed. To distinguish between clicks, there are risks on the button: two risks for raising and one for lowering the volume. In practice, you still need to feel them with your finger. In Voxtel and i-Mate, the keys are equally comfortable.

The memory card slot in Voxtel is closed with a plastic cap. In i-Mate and HTC it is open. Separately, we will mention such a seemingly standard part as the key to turn off the device or screen. In Voxtel and HTC, this is a separate hardware button, everything is familiar: a short press turns the screen off and on, a long press turns the communicator itself. In i-Mate, for unknown reasons, they went the original way and combined this key with the end call button. To turn off the display, you need to hold the key for 2-3 seconds, to turn it on - about the same. If you hold it for a second longer, the screen lights up and goes out again. At first, this feature is a little confusing, you need to get used to it.

Summing up the subtotal. In HTC, not everything is in order with the volume key, in i-Mate - with the power button. On the other hand, Voxtel does not have these problems. Give him a plus.

Management

Let's turn to the convenience of managing communicators. HTC uses a traditional navigation block layout. It includes six buttons and a five-way navigation button in the center. This set is enough to perform the simplest actions without using a pen. We are talking, first of all, about the "Ok" key, located to the right below the navigation button, with its help from any application or menu you can return to the Today screen. On the left, at the same level, there is a button to activate the Start menu. The top row contains two soft keys. The end call and accept call keys are located inside the navigation pairs. This layout of the keys is exactly the same in the Voxtel W520. Keeping the same operations for each button. This is a wise decision on Voxtel's part. This set of buttons has proven itself.

The i-Mate JAMA uses the old version, there are two soft keys, end call and call accept buttons and a five-way button. The device loses to competitors in the ability to work without a pen.

Another aspect of ease of use is remapping keys. In HTC P3400, these are 4 buttons to which you can assign five actions or applications (one key is pressed once or held down). Voxtel has two such buttons, i-Mate has only one.

It is not easy to evaluate the convenience of the navigation block for work. It may be different for people with large hands or fingers, and vice versa. Therefore, we confine ourselves to a general description. The keys are best separated in the HTC P3400. Here they are the most convex, pressing is well felt. Things are a little worse in Voxtel - the buttons are small and only slightly raised above the surface of the case. In the i-Mate JAMA, the navigation keys are large and well pressed, but the central button is inconvenient. It is squeezed inside the rest of the block and is disproportionately small. When working with this key, you have to press your finger into the center so as not to inadvertently make a wrong press.

Stylus attachment, memory card

The description of the pen attachment, at first glance, may seem excessively picky, a desire to add as much as possible to the comparison. But in practice, this parameter turned out to be very important. Let's start with the fact that the styluses of our comparison communicators are very different, and the location of the mount on the case is not always unambiguously convenient.

Let's start with the HTC P3400. The pen of this communicator is the smallest and thinnest and, as a result, the most uncomfortable. If we imagine that the P3400 has already been bought, then it is quite possible to get used to the pen. This element is unfamiliar for some time, but it is possible to work with it. The pen mount is located on the top right side of the case. In order to remove the stylus, you need to pry it with your fingernail or in some other way. Inserting the pen into the slot is very convenient - just lower it into the hole and press.

The Voxtel W520 has the longest and thickest stylus, it is securely held in the hand and comfortable to use. Although for some users its dimensions may well be large. The pen is designed more for those who have already dealt with pocket computers, where styluses are traditionally quite long and thick. The connector is located on the top right of the device. The stylus is removed with a fingernail or other object - it must be pryed off. To insert the pen into place, you just need to lower it into the slot and apply pressure. But at the same time, you must first check whether it enters the compartment correctly. The fact is that the upper part of the Voxtel W520 pen has an incomprehensible shape. As a result, the stylus can rest against the compartment so that it does not fit tightly, after which it must be removed and lowered into the slot again. In words, it seems like a nitpick and a trifle, but in practice this shortcoming very often makes itself felt, it is inconvenient.

In i-Mate JAMA, the stylus is telescopic. The halves move, it can be made short or long. The pen is quite thick and comfortable. It can be considered the most optimal among the presented devices, here the user has a choice, and this is a plus. The mount, located at the bottom right, is quite convenient.

The machines support different memory card formats. In i-Mate JAMA this is a MicroSD card, in Voxtel W520 it is MiniSD and, finally, in HTC P3400 it is SD/MMC. Let's see the average prices for memory cards of different sizes for competitors.

As you can see, over the past few months, the cost of cards has steadily decreased, so today even MicroSD cards are quite cheap. In terms of ease of use and price, the HTC P3400 wins. SD/MMC cards are, firstly, the cheapest, and secondly, 4 GB cards of this format are the most common today. Another important point is the support of SDIO standard in HTC P3400. If desired, you can expand the functionality of the communicator with a map with Wi-Fi or GPS. Do not forget that these are not all available interfaces.

Screen

All three devices are equipped with displays with characteristics typical for communicators. These are TFT screens capable of displaying up to 65 thousand colors and having a resolution of 320x240 pixels (QVGA). Let's look at the physical dimensions and, accordingly, the diagonals of the screens.

Viewing angles, as befits budget communicators, are not too impressive for all competitors. The problem is always typical - small vertical angles, distortions are visible even with a slight deviation. HTC P3400 has 4 backlight levels. In the bright sun, the display behaves tolerantly, the picture fades significantly, it becomes difficult to read the information. Minimal illumination is comfortable for working with the communicator in the dark and reading from the screen. At the maximum level, the backlight is moderately bright. The Voxtel W520 has 5 backlight levels, at the maximum level it is very bright, but the screen glare is too strong in the sun. To read the information you have to tilt it at different angles. There is no backlight adjustment in i-Mate JAMA, it is either active or disabled. Let's write it off on a test sample, if the brightness setting does not appear by the time sales begin, it will be at least strange. At this stage, the screen brightness is more than moderate, in some cases the screen seems dim, and the brightness cannot be increased.

It is impossible to single out a clear leader by display. It's clear that working with the HTC P3400's screen is a bit more convenient, but the size is sacrificed for the display, which is noticeably large. If in terms of dimensions we singled out i-Mate, then it is logical to mark HTC when evaluating screens.

Work offline

Each communicator contains a Li-Ion battery. Compare capacity:

In HTC P3400, one battery charge is enough for 3-4 days of work with 30 minutes of calls per day and nothing more. With the use of other functions, the time is greatly reduced. For i-Mate and Voxtel, the results are about a day better. The display plays its part. Here are the results of our standard battery life test.

Reading mode – minimum load mode. The backlight of the screen is set to the minimum level, convenient for reading. Haali Reader turns on and auto-scrolls.

MP3 mode – load mode when playing music. The screen backlight is set to the minimum level, the volume is set to the medium level, headphones are connected to the communicator. MP3 files with a bitrate of 128 Kbit/s are played using Windows Media Player.

Maximum load – maximum load mode. The screen brightness is set to the maximum level. We turn on the TCPMP player and the cyclic playback of movies with a resolution of 320x240 pixels starts.

As you can see from the graph, the battery life of the devices is approximately comparable. HTC P3400 could be a leader due to a more capacious battery, but the logical difference in the display diagonal makes itself felt. In reading a book and listening to music, HTC and i-Mate show similar results, Voxtel is a little behind. The maximum load mode is almost identical for all devices. As a result, we do not take into account the battery life parameter due to fairly similar results.

Camera

Each communicator has a 2 megapixel camera (CMOS), autofocus and macro shooting are not available in any device. The tradition of using mediocre cameras in WM-devices (the exception is HTC X7500) is gradually beginning to fade, but this process is still slow. The picture quality is at an acceptable level for HTC P3400. Photos of the Voxtel W520 are bearable, but below average. The image quality of the i-Mate is at the lowest level, it remains to be attributed to the test sample, the photos are simply terrible in quality. In Voxtel and i-Mate, the same characteristic feature is observed - the photos are blurry. And this effect is applied too much. On the other hand, HTC suffers from excessively sharp images. Let's take a look at the camera interfaces separately and compare their convenience.

The HTC P3400 uses a traditional Taiwanese interface: a translucent menu on the background of the viewfinder display. In general, it is convenient, although moving between points could be easier. Let's talk a little about the camera interface and its settings (names of elements and menus are given for the local version of the communicator). The following resolutions are available for photos:

  • 1600x1200
  • 1280x960
  • 640x480
  • 320x240
  • 160x120

The following parameters are changed: image quality (mainly expressed in the size of the resulting image), white balance, effects. You can also adjust the Contrast, Sharpness, Hue, Saturation values ​​(by default, these settings are automatically adjusted). Additional settings are available: a timer, a time stamp on the photo, mute the shutter sound and some others.

Video is recorded in MPEG4, MotionJPEG, H.263 format at Medium (176x144) or Fine (128x96) resolution. In general, the settings in video mode are the same as those in photo mode. Of the features, we note: enabling / disabling sound recording, setting limits on the duration or size of the final file. The quality and resolution of the recorded is far from ideal, although you can still make out the subjects of the shooting. In addition to photo and video modes, there are several more: video for MMS, photo card for contact, "sport" mode. A series of up to 5 photos with a short time delay - "sports" mode.

The Voxtel W520 camera application interface is more original than HTC's, but much less informative. Viewfinder mode displays information about the current resolution, shooting mode, and one of the settings (brightness, saturation, contrast, etc.). The following resolutions are available for shooting:

It makes no sense to consider the image quality of the i-Mate JAMA camera in the test sample. They are as mediocre as can be. Let's turn to the camera interface, it is almost completely identical to that of the Voxtel W520. The reason is simple - both devices are created by the same manufacturer - the Chinese TFW. There is only one difference in the camera interface - the display in the viewfinder mode in JAMA is simply empty, there is no information on it. You can make a viewfinder window, and then the current zoom and the number of possible shots will be displayed on the screen, there is no other information here. The camera settings are completely identical to the device from Voxtel.

The user has access to 49.16 MB in HTC P3400, 61.26 MB in i-Mate JAMA and 66.10 MB in Voxtel W520. There is enough RAM almost always, and if you have an expansion card, the amount of built-in flash memory is not so important.

We traditionally start talking about performance with the SPB Benchmark package. Over time, the package becomes less and less adequate, even when it comes to comparing Windows Mobile. For this reason, we do not include all tests from the package, limiting ourselves to a few of the most revealing ones. In our testing, the package already plays a formal role - its results are incorrect.

CPU Index - The index describes the performance of the CPU.

We ran a video test with The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) and the results are as follows. Performance is largely tied to graphics accelerators and the Wireless MMX set, which is built into the latest Intel XScale processor. A performance of around 100% means that the movie plays on average without dropping frames, smoothly, but dips are possible on active scenes. Values ​​from 120% and above allow you to talk about excellent movie playback without any delays.

The results of the test were not entirely expected. Voxtel W520 hardly surprised me, the device can't cope with any video, including fully converted and greatly simplified in terms of quality. The results of HTC P3400 are logical, you could already see them in the corresponding review. The device is suitable for playing converted video, although frame drops are still possible. The i-Mate JAMA demonstrated the most unexpected results - the communicator is at the level of Voxtel W520 in terms of video playback speed. No comment.

The picture quality is at an acceptable level for HTC P3400. Photos of the Voxtel W520 are bearable, but below average. The image quality of the i-Mate is at the lowest level, it remains to be attributed to the test sample, the photos are simply terrible in quality. In Voxtel and i-Mate, the same characteristic feature is observed - the photos are blurry. And this effect is applied too much. On the other hand, HTC suffers from excessively sharp images. Let's take a look at the camera interfaces separately and compare their convenience.

The HTC P3400 uses a traditional Taiwanese interface: a translucent menu on the background of the viewfinder display. In general, it is convenient, although moving between points could be easier. Let's talk a little about the camera interface and its settings (names of elements and menus are given for the local version of the communicator). The following resolutions are available for photos:

The following parameters are changed: image quality (mainly expressed in the size of the resulting image), white balance, effects. Video is recorded in MPEG4, MotionJPEG, H.263 format in Medium (176x144) or Fine (128x96) resolution. In general, the settings in video mode are the same as those in photo mode. Of the features, we note: enabling / disabling sound recording, setting limits on the duration or size of the final file. The quality and resolution of the recorded is far from ideal, although it is still possible to make out the subjects of the shooting. In addition to photo and video modes, there are several more: video for MMS, photo card for contact, "sport" mode. A series of up to 5 photos with a short time delay - "sports" mode.

The Voxtel W520 camera application interface is more original than HTC's, but much less informative. Viewfinder mode displays information about the current resolution, shooting mode, and one of the settings (brightness, saturation, contrast, etc.). There is only one difference in the camera interface - the display in the viewfinder mode in JAMA is simply empty, there is no information on it. You can make a viewfinder window, and then the current zoom and the number of possible shots will be displayed on the screen, there is no other information here. We traditionally start talking about performance with the SPB Benchmark package. Over time, the package becomes less and less adequate, even when it comes to comparing Windows Mobile. For this reason, we do not include all tests from the package, limiting ourselves to a few of the most revealing ones. In our testing, the package already plays a formal role - its results are incorrect.

We ran a video test with The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) and the results are as follows. Performance is largely tied to graphics accelerators and the Wireless MMX set, which is built into the latest Intel XScale processor. A performance of around 100% means that the movie plays on average without dropping frames, smoothly, but dips are possible on active scenes. Values ​​from 120% and above allow you to talk about excellent movie playback without any delays.

The results of the test were not entirely expected. Voxtel W520 hardly surprised me, the device can't cope with any video, including fully converted and greatly simplified in terms of quality. The results of HTC P3400 are logical, you could already see them in the corresponding review. The device is suitable for playing converted video, although frame drops are still possible. The i-Mate JAMA demonstrated the most unexpected results - the communicator is at the level of Voxtel W520 in terms of video playback speed. No comment.

A person who has not worked with such a device almost always characterizes it as something very complex, business people or so-called business users are also added here. Obviously, if not the most tangible, then quite a large contribution to the formation of opinion is played by the final cost of the product. An expensive device can be either a very functional device, or an extremely “fashion” one, when the principle “the more expensive, the better” applies.

This stereotype is beneficial for companies - communicators can remain quite expensive, while their functionality is unlikely to change much over time. But the market does not stand still, and in addition to the companies that make up the backbone, and for Windows Mobile these were HTC customers in 2005 and 2006, new manufacturers are entering the game. Small companies, whose traditional card is the low cost of products, have penetrated the expanses of Windows Mobile. This applies in particular to Voxtel.

HTC sooner or later had to present a budget solution and they did. Voxtel has already practiced the skills of creating a budget communicator on the Voxtel W420 model. W520 can be considered a logical continuation of this device. For i-Mate, the release of a budget model may be a temporary solution to the problem of lack of products and their poor quality.

All three models can be easily placed both in trouser pockets and in a jacket or shirt. But in the latter case, JAMA looks a little better. Point earns i-Mate JAMA.

In Voxtel and i-Mate, the same characteristic feature is observed - the photos are blurry. And this effect is applied too much. On the other hand, HTC suffers from excessively sharp images. Let's take a look at the camera interfaces separately and compare their convenience.

The HTC P3400 uses a traditional Taiwanese interface: a translucent menu on the background of the viewfinder display. In general, it is convenient, although moving between points could be easier. Let's talk a little about the camera interface and its settings (names of elements and menus are given for the local version of the communicator). The following resolutions are available for photos:

The following parameters are changed: image quality (mainly expressed in the size of the resulting image), white balance, effects. Video is recorded in MPEG4, MotionJPEG, H.263 format at Medium (176x144) or Fine (128x96) resolution. In general, the settings in video mode are the same as those in photo mode. Of the features, we note: enabling / disabling sound recording, setting limits on the duration or size of the final file. The quality and resolution of the recorded is far from ideal, although you can still make out the subjects of the shooting. In addition to photo and video modes, there are several more: video for MMS, photo card for contact, "sport" mode. A series of up to 5 photos with a short time delay - "sports" mode.

The Voxtel W520 camera application interface is more original than HTC's, but much less informative. Viewfinder mode displays information about the current resolution, shooting mode, and one of the settings (brightness, saturation, contrast, etc.). There is only one difference in the camera interface - the display in the viewfinder mode in JAMA is simply empty, there is no information on it. You can make a viewfinder window, and then the current zoom and the number of possible shots will be displayed on the screen, there is no other information here. We traditionally start talking about performance with the SPB Benchmark package. Over time, the package becomes less and less adequate, even when it comes to comparing Windows Mobile. For this reason, we do not include all tests from the package, limiting ourselves to a few of the most revealing ones. In our testing, the package already plays a formal role - its results are incorrect.

CPU Index - The index describes the performance of the CPU.

We ran a video test with The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) and the results are as follows. Performance is largely tied to graphics accelerators and the Wireless MMX set, which is built into the latest Intel XScale processor. A performance of around 100% means that the movie plays on average without dropping frames, smoothly, but dips are possible on active scenes. Values ​​from 120% and above allow you to talk about excellent movie playback without any delays.

The results of the test were not entirely expected. Voxtel W520 hardly surprised me, the device can't cope with any video, including fully converted and greatly simplified in terms of quality. The results of HTC P3400 are logical, you could already see them in the corresponding review. The device is suitable for playing converted video, although frame drops are still possible. The i-Mate JAMA demonstrated the most unexpected results - the communicator is at the level of Voxtel W520 in terms of video playback speed. No comment.

Interface connectors are standard for HTC, more precisely, there is only one. This is the good old ExtUSB, through which the device is charged, it serves as an output to the headset, as well as to connect the cable. We have already talked about it above. Voxtel has a separate MiniUSB connector for the charger and cable, as well as a 2.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones. In i-Mate connectors are identical to Voxtel W520. Bluetooth i-Mate and Voxtel use module version 1.2. Voxtel W520 has support for stereo profile (A2DP), while i-Mate JAMA does not. Until now, manufacturers of Windows Mobile devices have not spoiled us with products in the budget category. I do not undertake to explain this phenomenon with accuracy, but I will make one assumption. Communicators, as a rule, have a cost of 15 thousand rubles. In 2005 and 2006, these were the minimum prices. Devices cost much more than this money. The image of a communicator, formed over several years, is quite typical and overgrown with many clichés. A person who has not worked with such a device almost always characterizes it as something very complex, business people or so-called business users are also added here. Obviously, if not the most tangible, then quite a large contribution to the formation of opinion is played by the final cost of the product. An expensive device can be either a very functional device, or an extremely “fashion” one, when the principle “the more expensive, the better” applies.

This stereotype is beneficial for companies - communicators can remain quite expensive, while their functionality is unlikely to change much over time. But the market does not stand still, and in addition to the companies that make up the backbone, and for Windows Mobile these were HTC customers in 2005 and 2006, new manufacturers are entering the game. Small companies, whose traditional card is the low cost of products, have penetrated the expanses of Windows Mobile. This applies in particular to Voxtel.

HTC sooner or later had to present a budget solution and they did. Voxtel has already practiced the skills of creating a budget communicator on the Voxtel W420 model. W520 can be considered a logical continuation of this device. For i-Mate, the release of a budget model may be a temporary solution to the problem of lack of products and their poor quality.

In a comparative review, we will test the Voxtel and i-Mate models (the HTC P3400 review is already on the site), and also compare all three devices, traditionally highlighting all the minuses and pluses. In some of the discussed features, we will mark the advantages of the device with a + sign, if all devices are equal in the selected parameter, then the parameter does not participate in the final assessment.

Design

With a high degree of confidence, we can say that all three communicators have a strict, almost classic design. This is facilitated by the use of dark gray, the absence of bright elements. i-Mate JAMA stands out a little due to silver inserts on the back of the case, as well as side keys and a speaker grille. But this is not a very bright feature. In HTC P3400, the back of the case is made in black, which makes the communicator stand out a little.

The appearance of each communicator is unique, the simplest among them is the Voxtel W520. It is definitely impossible to identify a leader in design, different people have their own preferences, so there is parity here.

Body materials

Let's turn to the body materials. The plastic used is almost the same for Voxtel W520 and i-Mate JAMA. This is a material typical for the budget segment, it does not stand out in any way. Its advantages include low soiling. But, on the other hand, both devices are made with sputtering elements, over time the case may lose its presentable appearance. The coating will rub off in some places. In this respect HTC P3400 is preferable. Here, only the front panel is made of simple plastic, that is, plastic occupies a small part of the area. The entire back side and ribs are made of plastic with a coating resembling rubber (soft-touch). The device is more comfortable to hold in the hand, it does not slip. At the same time, there are no scratches or any scuffs on such a coating.

In terms of the quality of materials, we put a "+" for the HTC P3400 communicator. It uses more interesting and convenient plastic (soft-touch), besides, such a coating is not subject to rapid wear, which can be said about coated plastic from competitors.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, Voxtel and i-Mate are almost identical. Both devices noticeably outperform HTC. The latter is wider and thicker than competitors. Let's turn to the exact data for comparison:

Thanks to the rounded edges and ends, it is convenient to hold the device, even despite the dimensions. JAMA outperforms both in this parameter. The communicator is narrow and light, most conveniently located in the hand.

All three models can be easily placed both in trouser pockets and in a jacket or shirt. But in the latter case, JAMA looks a little better. Point earns i-Mate JAMA.

Element Arrangement

On the front side, everything is standard. Each communicator has a display, a navigation unit and a speaker. At the top of all models there is an indicator of the operation of the device and wireless interfaces, as well as missed calls, received messages and the process of charging devices. Voxtel W520 excelled here. In this model, the indicator is originally combined with an additional button. To the right of the loudspeaker above the display, we see a browser call button in the device, it can be reassigned to another action or application. Another problem with this button is the separation of clicks. That is, it is rather difficult to understand whether the volume increases or decreases when pressed. To distinguish between clicks, there are risks on the button: two risks for raising and one for lowering the volume. In practice, you still need to feel them with your finger. In Voxtel and i-Mate, the keys are equally comfortable.

In Voxtel and HTC, this is a separate hardware button, everything is familiar: a short press turns the screen off and on, a long press turns the communicator itself. To turn off the display, you need to hold the key for 2-3 seconds, to turn it on - about the same. If you hold it for a second longer, the screen lights up and goes out again. The pen is designed more for those who have already dealt with pocket computers, where styluses are traditionally quite long and thick. The connector is located on the top right of the device. The stylus is removed with a fingernail or other object - it must be pryed off. To insert the pen into place, you just need to lower it into the slot and apply pressure. But at the same time, you must first check whether it enters the compartment correctly. The fact is that the upper part of the Voxtel W520 pen has an incomprehensible shape. As a result, the stylus can rest against the compartment so that it does not fit tightly, after which it must be removed and lowered into the slot again. In words, it seems like a nitpick and a trifle, but in practice this shortcoming very often makes itself felt, it is inconvenient.

In i-Mate JAMA, the stylus is telescopic. The halves move, it can be made short or long. The pen is quite thick and comfortable. It can be considered the most optimal among the presented devices, here the user has a choice, and this is a plus. The mount, located at the bottom right, is quite convenient.

The problem is always typical - small vertical angles, distortions are visible even with a slight deviation. HTC P3400 has 4 backlight levels. In the bright sun, the display behaves tolerantly, the picture fades significantly, it becomes difficult to read the information. Minimal illumination is comfortable for working with the communicator in the dark and reading from the screen. At the maximum level, the backlight is moderately bright. The Voxtel W520 has 5 backlight levels, at the maximum level it is very bright, but the screen glare is too strong in the sun. To read the information you have to tilt it at different angles. It is impossible to single out a clear leader by display. Voxtel has a separate MiniUSB connector for the charger and cable, as well as a 2.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones. In i-Mate connectors are identical to Voxtel W520. Both use a standard OS program to manage the interfaces.

    Bluetooth i-Mate and Voxtel use module version 1.2. Voxtel W520 has support for stereo profile (A2DP), while i-Mate JAMA does not. The HTC P3400 Bluetooth 2.0 module without EDR has stereo profile support. The number of profiles is comparable for all models. To control the Bluetooth module, standard drivers from Microsoft are used in all three cases.

    Wi-Fi The Voxtel W520 communicator has a built-in Wi-Fi module. The work of this component did not cause complaints. Another issue is the value of the module and its necessity. It will not be possible to use Wi-Fi for Skype in these models - the performance is too low. It remains to be used in Internet cafes and near hot spots, for browsing the Internet. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that the screen diagonal in this case is critical, and all values ​​below 2.8” are beyond convenience for full-fledged work on the Internet.
